I spend between 2-4k a month now, it all depends. I like shopping for clothes and jewelry and beauty products, which counts for a lot of my monthly expenditure. I do spend on food, though. I'm a vegan and don't eat out often, but I buy the highest quality produce I can find. Organic brown rice, imported olives, raw almonds and cashews, tons of fruit. It does add up.

I can't speak out strongly enough against eating in canteens. There is a difference between getting the lowest price for something and getting a good value - food just shouldn't be that cheap. I think a lot of the symptoms of depression and anxiety experienced by expats here are a result of their toxic diet. Take care of yourselves!

My main beef (or is it pork) with canteens is the temperature of the food, served on cold mess trays.
I abhor cold food and usually go back to my apartment across the alley to nuke it for a couple of minutes, even in summer.
