| If you have; i) a Confirmation Letter of Invitation which specifies that you may apply for a Z visa at the Commisioners Office of the Foreign Ministry of the P.R. China in Hong Kong SAR, ii) a SAFEA issued Working Permit and iii) a copy of an approved medical examination report then, yes, 100% definitely you can get a Z visa in Hong Kong. |

Has this changed? their website http://www.fmcoprc.gov.hk/eng/zgqz/bgfwxx/ says this,
4, If you don't reside or work in Hong Kong permanently, you are required to apply Chinese visa from the Embassy or Consulate-General of Peoples' Republic of China in your resident country.
Unfortunately, my resident country won't let me apply either |

Which province / city is your school in? You might get more replies especially from people with recent experience.
Generally it really depends on if the province or city you'll be working in allows applicants to apply in Hong Kong. I know for sure Guangdong province does not and I have heard a few other provinces and cities which do not as well. |

| This doesnt help for your location, but my housemates recently went to HK for visa runs. One was at the beginning of Feb, one last month. This was for a training school in GuangXi province. |

| Thanks so much. I looked at the HK website and it said that you can't if you're not a resident. Maybe entering on a tourist visa and going to HK would be better than trying to get a Z visa straight away. |

| Just did my tourist to Z visa run last week. All went well and it cost me 500 HK$ It took approx 1 hour from line outside in the morning to getting papers filled out and waiting. I'm Canadian if that helps. |

It would be more useful if you mentioned the province or city you are working in as some provinces will allow foreigners to apply for the Z visa in Hong Kong, while others will not. |

| HR told me I can only apply back home or here. And where I am now, I can't apply. |

| Naturegirl, you can ask the school to list Hong Kong on your invitation letter. That is what my wife and I had our school do and we got it no problem. |

They said no. Hoenstly, I think it would be cheaper to DHL them back home. I'm estimating about $400 usd for the paperwork and service charge. Flights and hotels in HK would be more expensive. Plus, I can't risk not getting a visa, especially with a baby in tow. If the US denies my visa, considering I have to go through WDC and Chicago, then I'll just look for a job here. |

If the school could actually get the paperwork to say HK then there would be no reason your visa would be denied (same with it saying Thailand or Korea). It is either your school's provincial government refusing or the school's lack of understand of what to do.
The whole, go back to home country or country of residence, has ran circles around Chinese admin. Maybe the government put it in place to point out stupidity at admin levels
I also considered sending the documents back home. In the end, I just repeated over and over that I could do it in HK. Eventually, I did it in HK. |

| To be honest, it would be cheaper and easier to just send the docs back home. I'm thining about 400 bucks, plus the visa costs. Flights to HK would probably be that, plus food and hotel. |
