Jiangsu-AHEAD Foundation programs associated with UNSW (Australia) are close to this scam. Avoid smooth-talking "Dr. Ken Smith", Director of Foreign Faculty in China at all costs. All lies about how life actually is in China, contracts and other things. They do not offer a SAFEA contract to faculty. The contract you bring to the embassy for the Z-visa IS NOT the same contract you sign once in China. Fine for a paid ladies man as himself. |

You have to work almost 4 months just to break even....
"[1]¥3000 allowance per month "
"Fees of Program
[1] Program Application fee $100 USD, to be paid at the time you submit your package application materials.
[2] Program Administration, Documentation and Consulting fee $1600 USD, to be paid at the time we give you the invitation letter, by which you can apply for the visa." |

I know someone who got sucked into something just like this, right down to the free phone and the guaranteed refund if they can't get the work visa. He got the phone but no visa.
Wow. An internship. THAT will look GREAT on a resume (if one makes it out of China). |

This link is worse. Placement fee of around 22,000 RMB, with a salary of 2000 RMB per month after. |
Any one stupid enough to take this? There seems no shortage of FTs on th is very forum willing to work for these wages. 2000 a month? Thats not even a decent weekly wage. |

Some FT's on this forum claim to live off 1000 a month, with this deal of 2000 a month they can save 50% of their salary. |

Not to sound arrogant or anything, in my old 3rd tier city I rarely reached 1k a month. It's not a false claim.....it's very doable in many places when your only costs are food.....just some foreigners are incapable of going 24 hours without being drunk in a bar. |

or without eating real foods. Not the gutter oil stuff that comes out of many local eateries. When one meal at the only decent clean lunch place around my apartment and the school costs 30 RMB (always packed though) and the cafeteria serves crap only the school staff eats there. Lets see, thats 600 RMB just for lunch. Other cafeteria places off campus are more reasonable - 25 RMB to 30 RMB. That leaves 400 RMB for breakfast and dinner. Undoable. Sorry, my nearly 1/2 century old body is not accustom to eating barely edible foods.
And I don't drink beer or go to bars - not in China anyways. I'm too old for chasing tail.
It seems a contest to see who can deprive themselves of life's little luxuries (like eating normally) to justify their low pay.
Edited for the grammar nazis here. lives -> life's |

I seem to recall xiguagua cooked food. Although I could be wrong there. I still dont get the need for continual attacks on people who accept jobs with what they deem to be a fair salary though. Its a common theme of late on here.
Anyway - the topic of this thread was regarding the placement services that are on offer in China, and I think everyone agrees that are a pretty bad deal whichever way you look at them. |

Yeah, that's correct. I cook....and I learned to cook in China by myself after getting over my fear of it. Then you never have to worry about gutter oil.
Anyway yeah, it depends where you are. Living in huge cities obviously you need to be well compensated, but living in the boonies you don't need 10k per month. Sure if that's what they give you then there's no complaints, but going to Nongmin City where the average Chinese makes 500 a month (just example) then you should be able to get by easily on 4-5k.
PAYING for placement in China is completely different though. I don't think that kind of thing is acceptable in ANY country. Paying to get a job.....sounds crazy to me. But there's a lot of people that don't want to do the research and just take the first result they get when googling "work in china" Stupid of them, but if you can create a business that just takes advantage of people without any common sense, then more power to you. |

Some posters can't get over the fact that some of us know how to cook and can enjoy a happy and healthy but frugal lifestyle. I agree that this is not in any way related to the topic here. Somebody would have to be awfully foolish or naive to fall for this scam. From reading the Chinglish on the website, it is obvious this is not a program set up by native speakers in Canada. |
