Hi,

Just trying to connect with others working for this school or getting ready to. I agreed to an offer, but I am waiting a while for the contract to sign. Yes, I know that this is middle of nowhere conservative Saudi, so need need to warn me on that front, but just trying to get an idea of how to prepare (from people who are there or going there soon like me.)

Hi Vamanos. I just received my contract letter for a job with the British International School Tabuk.

Have you received your contract letter yet?

aridion, is it a hard copy letter sent to your home address or an email letter that you will print? Does it state your salary and other conditions exactly?

It is an e mail attachment that I have to print and sign. It does state salary, contract, period, housing etc.

It would be good to remember, though, that in case of any dispute, it is ONLY the Arabic version of an agreement/contact that is "legally" binding.

Just to give you a couple of examples. The English version of my first contract stated "airfare" whereas what was meant was "tickets" and also said "medications" rather than "medical care." "Tickets" and "medical care" were in the Arabic version.

Regards,
John

John, in what way did this detail in the translation affect you?

Dear rainbowprof,

Both positively and negatively: positive because "medical care" is better than "medications" and negative because (at the beginning at least) I had to fly Saudia rather than pick my airline.

But the examples were intended only to show that there CAN be differences and they could range anywhere from good for you to bad (or even very bad) for you.

Regards,
John

It's in English.

I am in a situation now to go with the Saudi offer (nice money and shouldn't be scrutinized like in the UK), or stay in the UK and do my NQT year. I am not sure which to take on.

This might be a good place to start for someone who meets the minimum criteria, and has a little experience of the Middle East. Push for a salary of R15K pm plus the usual benefits; it's just not worth going there for less. If you never worked in the ME before, get ready for a shock.
