The uni in Medina is full of the pious - especially "reverts" |

John: these guys do a far better job than many of the 'infidel' backpackers who do not give a damn about the place, the students and anything related to Saudi. Even though some of them may not be very experienced, they are ready to listen and learn. Now, do this with the 'infidel' backpackers who utter the F-word every now and then.
I find it impossible to work with colleagues who are only concerned with riyals and bad-mouthing anything that moves in Saudi. |

Dear Linguist,
I know for a fact that scot47's first name isn't "John" - but mine is .
I'm a bit confused about your post, though. You're comparing "infidel backpacker teachers" with so-called "pious" students, right? Actually, from my experience with the "pious ones," I'll agree - most of those that I had in my classes were pretty good students; some of them even had a sense of humor. But things must have really gone downhill in Saudi if you're getting "backpackers" there now.
Regards,
John |

I do believe that linguist was referring to convert teachers versus backpacker teachers. I never encountered any of those in the Gulf, though I hear that some recruiters these days manage to sneak a few into Saudi and Oman.
I'd say that the key in both cases is if they are properly credentialed.

Thanks Veiled. I agree with you that credentials are what should be looked at. This said, a proper attitude from us (language teachers) coming to this country to teach is a MUST.
I've said it many times, the influx of unprepared scum backpackers coming to Saudi to uhh teach (!!!) is not helping us maintain this profession as a noble one. |
