Hi,

I'm considering taking on a private class for my friends' company, which will most likely be about 5-10 businessmen for 1 or 2 hours a week. Their levels will probably be a bit hit or miss but the primary focus is on conversation and a little business English (but most importantly just communication).

I'm looking for a textbook I can use in the class and I would appreciate any recommendations.

I have previously worked at AEON (the eikaiwa school, not the shopping mall) for about 18 months and I think their textbooks were pretty good. Something similar or along those lines would be ideal. (Warmup > Listening > Conversation > Freer) I've taught a few private lessons, but usually used the students own textbooks and branched off into some freer stuff, never done a group lesson privately before.

I have no idea about AEON textbooks as I previously worked for GEOS. I think for group classes there I used the Atlas series. At the high school where I work now, I used "A Conversation Book 2" with a mixed level parents class. It is very vocabulary based - but also has some speaking activities. The Interchange series is always a good fall-back series as it has listening activities too and is like a more adult version of the My First Passport series.

What did you mean by this? Chatting about the Giants? the weather? how well people use chopsticks? Any eikaiwa book will usually suffice.

Or did you mean communication related to work (negotiations, sales, marketing, business presentations, etc.)? If this, I'd suggest looking up any of the big publishers and seeing what they have to offer in the way of business English textbooks. Oxford seems to have a nice one on business presentations. Fairly high level, though, and the glossary is a nice supplemental support.

I liked a book by the Economist called SKills Book, I think. Cool It was very good.

Without knowing a lot more about the class, it's almost impossible to make any sort of reasonable recommendation.

I think it's always a good idea to go to a large bookstore and browse their selection of textbooks and find one that you're comfortable with.

I got more info about it last night. It's a 2 hour class once a week and there are 4 or 6 students who are all beginner level (maybe JHS 2nd grader level) aged between 20 and 50. They will be using English to communicate with foreigners while travelling overseas, but business English is not important at all apparently, just communication.....

I will try and take a look at a few books at a store today. I've heard Interchange mentioned a few times - do you think it would be suitable for this type of class?

I'm hoping to find a student book that has some homework pages for them to do each week, plus a listening, conversation and practice section with an accompanying teacher book during the lesson would be good.
