Some friends were telling me how much Chinese people make. I'm not sure how accurate this list is.

Nurse - 4,000 RMB a month
Flight attendant - 5,000
Engineer - around 11,000 (I don't know what kind of engineer)
Police officer - in the 18,000 range
....

you are not a nurse.
nor are you a flight attendant, nor an engineer.
probably not even a police officer.
what does it matter what chinese in those occupations make?

you may have been one of those in a previous life, but not in china.
your prior skills are (likely) not marketable here.

all you got is a passport and a very light tan.
you are a part-time engrish tutor/coach/babysitter.
(sure, there are a few working at international schools, testing ielts,
running their own schools, etc., but most are uni/mill employees.)

you (few exceptions) are not special. you are easily replaceable.
don't matter what them others make. there don't be no comparison.

No. As soon as my apartment contract is done and my wife decides it's time, I'm out. Just biding my time and counting the days... but I absolutely will never work for another school again unless I am poverty-stricken desperate.

The O.P. wanted to know what the locals make, so I answered the question.

If you go outside the realm of colleges and universities, and into private situations, as someone who runs his own school now I can tell you that 99.9999% of FT's here are getting taken for a ride. I'd be happy to hire a few of you guys for 6K a month and put you into an apartment and get you a visa.
That is sort of how business works. But the capitalists take on the risk, so they expect the rewards.

No risk in quitting your job, folding everything you have, leaving your family, your home country, and moving to a strange country that you know nothing about and can't even speak the local language just to make less than the minimum wage in your own home country?

I would never expect so much from such an individual. But then again, I am not a capitalist; I am a modified free enterpriser.

I remember when I first got here, a police officer friend told me his monthly salary was 900rmb - then he showed me his BMW.

Something didn't add up there.

Just out of interest, if you are planning on going home, what will you do?

People do it. Therefore, the wage must be appropriate. Schools in China are not in business to save FTs from themselves, but to make a profit.
