hi - I am just about to head off to Thailand to teach in the south - exact location not determined but options are Surat Thani, Trang, Songkhla and Hat Yai. Does anyone have any advice on which of these would be best - I am looking for a fairly laid back place with good beaches but would also like if there was an expat community there!!
Any advice appreciated!! |

Other than staying away from bomb zones... good luck.
You are aware that the 4 southern provinces (Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala and Songkhla (including the city of Hat Yai)) do have issues with rebel fighters and vary in intensity from an unsettled quiet to an active combat zone.

| Thailand is having a heat wave now with temperatures in the 40's high humidity in the Bangkok area. I don't know if it is worse in the south. |

The best place to teach in Southern Thailand is in Satun province. There are beautiful beaches, offshore islands like Koh Tarutao/Langkawi nearby and a very laid back expat community. You are not far from Hat Yai too and the mountains and beautiful jungle terrain. The salary issue is another question. Most EFL teachers I know teaching in the province are volunteers and/or low wage earner EFL teachers. Expect a salary range of Baht 15,000 - Baht 30,000/Monthly if you teach there.
