I completely agree. I live in the smallest "city" in the province I'm in, and make a tidy sum.

And about privates:

You have them pay upfront. If they don't show, their loss. That's what I do with my kids now, although if I have time, I will do make-up classes.

'Spot' quotes of monthly or hourly rates aren't all that helpful.
Long commutes which you pay for to teach privates should be factored into the effective rate.
I've found that if you have a doddle in semester one because of some glitch or other you can be expected to teach up to the max in the contract in semester two.
For year-long contracts always think 'package' not monthly rate. Accom - standard and location, paid holidays and airfare allowances all affect the effective rate of remuneration.

You are right, the overall package should be considered .

For my job in Anhui:
The city was very small, for China, so even if I did not want to walk, and took a taxi, the taxi fare was only 10RMB each way.
The scheduled number of classes was the same for both semesters, but they did plan to have more classes the next year, and they told me that in advance.
The 2 bedroom house, not apartment, was free, and was a 2 minute walk from the school.
All paid holidays, 8000RMB airfare, 10 month contract.

My finding that job at that time was just pure dumb-luck.
I had emailed about 50 different schools and recruiters, and I took that job because the salary was the highest that I was offered at that time.

Many bad overall packages out there, but good overall packages can still be found.
