also why do the Vietnamese think they have a culture based on respect when they are some of the most disrespectful people on the planet and whty do some foreigners internalize this lie?

Something tells me most of your experience with the Vietnamese are those in the big cities. You should try visiting the countryside a bit. The Vietnamese in the smaller towns and cities are some of the most humble, respectful, and down to earth people I've ever met. The students from the country are vastly different from the students in the cities.
I used to think the same as you. Looking at the way people drive, and disrespect displayed in some of my classrooms, and how they tried to rip off the foreigners in markets, I used to think it was a rude culture too. But that's really not the case.
However, one thing I've noticed is that if you don't show any respect to the Vietnamese then they won't respect you at all. The Vietnamese are a notoriously fiery people. If they sense you are being rude or looking down on them, they won't put up with it. |

Well stated, Luke.....
I have to state that this mirrors my own experiences as well....funny yet sad how urban Viets will routinely look down upon their countryside brethren......I got a bit fed up with seeing the attitudes of the people (just like Mr. Chomsky alludes to) to the point where the residents of the two big cities of The North just repulsed me so much that I fled.....man did I make the right choice there! |

Yes, it's been an evolution. GeneralGiap--->Biaom------>NimChimsky------>? Now, just why is it people get banned? Oh, right! It's attacking the messenger, not the message. And just what has the message been from this character? Negativity, character assassinations, I AM THE BEST!!!, slagging off the natives, schoolboy observations on getting ahead in the workplace, using a half page wikipedia entry as an "interesting article"......bravo! |

The difference between Viet Nam and Vietnam is spelling not speaking. If you see the transcriptions that linguists write, they are continuous because that is how the words leave our mouths in any language. In the mid 19th century Hawaiian newspapers were written with no breaks between words and Hawaii was (for a short time) the most literate place on earth at over 80%.
Dekadan also brings up another interesting point with his mention of Saigon vs. HCMC. It seems to me that HCMC is organized in some ways like New York city with it's boroughs. So Saigon (1,3,5?) is analogous to Manhattan and maybe district 7 is Staten Island, Tan Binh is Queens (the airport) while places like Binh Tanh, Thu Duc and Go Vap are like Brooklyn and the Bronx. Outside districts like Cu Chi would be in another city in NY. I know its not exactly the same and HCMC has a lot more divisions but it seems to me that the concept is similar. |
