True. I get a little tired of hearing how EVERYTHING came from China and China invented everything, and China was the first to do everything, and blah blah blah. My favorite is when students that have never even left their farming hometowns talk about how much better China is than other countries. Yeah, life really couldn't be any better than waddling around knee-high in mud and garbage.

The whole test is just ridiculous. But it makes me wonder if anyone's failed it, or not been issued the FEC, or something.

I've wondered the same thing. Even when I failed the multiple choice part, my essay score gave me a 60% average for the test, so I passed (barely). (The FAO said he was told [by whom, I don't know] that I did well on the test, so maybe just having the necessary motor skills to fill the damn thing out.......)

Would this testing be required for people looking to volunteer in China? I am looking to do volunteer work in China as an English teacher. Hopefully I can help children who come from underprivileged homes. Would my qualifications and evaluation need to be the same as for paid work?

I am not sure what some of the posters are on about, but to anyone who wants to respond seriously, yes, I am interested in volunteering and would like to know what the requirements are. I have a strong interest in multicultural studies and in learning about different social, political and ethnic groups. I hold a degree from one of the most respected U.S. universities. I want to go overseas and learn more about other cultures before going back to the U.S. and getting into a responsible position with the UNESCO or other prestigious organizations. If anyone knows the visa and evaluation requirements, I would appreciate your sharing.

It does not seem to be a battle worth fighting, IMHO.

I did make sure that I scored highly in all categories, "foreigner pride" I guess.

Thanks for the help everyone. I am a pretty good judge of what's a scam and what's genuine, so I should be able to make that determination and avoid trouble pretty easily, but thanks for the concern. I have a very strong educational and work background, so I am giving up a lot to go to China. I know that most people are not in that situation. But I think it will be worth it in terms of a multicultural experience that will apply to future endeavors. And in my position, I really cannot see taking money out of a developing country. I realize that many would not have a choice about that, though.

Scholar, unless you have experience in China... and even if you do... it's not always that easy to spot the scams. Don't assume that the signs you know to look for will be applicable here. The saying, "This Is China" gains more and more meaning the longer you're here. Not to discourage you from donating your time and talents, you will likely find a spot and have a meaningful year teaching. Just keep in mind that China isn't your average developing nation.
