Can we see a source on this thing? I think it's a bit irresponsible to start posting this kind of stuff on a public forum unless it can be backed up by something concrete. And please, not a cut and paste from some obscure expat website that has no real source either.

I think it's helpful to hear about rumors; occasionally they turn out to have SOME validity, e.g., the test for foreign experts was a big deal a couple of years ago but it's pretty much fizzled out as far as really having any impact. If we have a heads up, we can circle the wagons and be prepared for any eventuality.

The OP could be true...but as the only only source right now is the person who upped the "ready to rumble" thread to "China would not hesitate to go nuclear," sorry if i'm a little skeptical.

Johnpartee, I don't think anyone in China or thinking of coming to China was making "career" decisions based on the rumor of that silly test some of us had to do. This rumored warning is quite different.

People should always be prepared for any eventuality when living abroad, no matter if things are quiet or getting a bit more volatile.

I'm VERY skeptical, but I wouldn't discount the possibility of some sort of "double check" of school's foreign teachers legality....... I seriously doubt a "round up" of foreigners walking the streets.....

Anytime I hear China and nation-wide application of some rule or law, I have to laugh. Is this like the social tax? Or is it like the above mentioned Foreign Expert Exam?

Reporting suspicious activities with a chance to appeal inaction at a public venue. We are talking about China? If the government were to roll out such a scheme it would open the floodgates. Give the people that inch and the government is asking to lose all the security they have left.

GWOW - great info if true, but your OP looked like a copy and paste
from somewhere. did you write it yerself or reprint someone elses
anti-nazi propaganda?

in other news, if there indeed shall be a nationwide crackdown, why
not ask why? MOD EDIT

have you read about the massive crackdown in the us targeting
chinese teachers, especially those at the confucious institutes?

apparently thousands of chinesers have been teaching on tourist
visas, or teaching at primary/middle schools in addition to their
work visa sponsors.

there will be thousands of chinese teachers thrown out, deported,
at the end of this semester. how dare they enforce immigration
laws! it's a pogrom! pink triangles!!!

"On May 17th, the United States Department of State sent out a policy directive to American universities sponsoring Confucius Institutes. It states that Chinese academics teaching grade-school levels at institutions without the proper accreditation are violating the terms of their visas and must leave the country at the end of the current term."

http://www.chariweb.com/2012/05/tit-for-tat-us-crackdown-on-illegal.html

http://blogs.wsj.com/chinarealtime/2012/05/24/u-s-rule-puts-confucius-schools-under-spotlight/?mod=google_news_blog

and this all began in the us (likely due to the china bashing during
the election cycle) before the as-yet-unannounced crackdown here.
your crackdown would be the chinese response.

the good news? here's the quid pro quo you've been yammering
on about for so long.

Seems more of a laundry list of things that have always had the potential to get someone in trouble, with a suggestion that these things are now more likely to get someone in trouble. As usual, the chances of getting caught in a bind are the spin of the roulette wheel. Anyone who is working illegally in any capacity runs the risk of falling afoul of the authorities. There's nothing wrong in pointing that out or speculating that enforcement may increase temporarily or permanently for whatever reason.

The stale, paranoid government mole, 50-center, recruiter or illegal school supporter masquerading as an FT poster thing has now gone way over the top. Look, warnings of danger are only beneficial when made in a rational and realistic way. Fear mongering, sky-is-falling negativity doesn't benefit anyone, nor does extrapolating isolated incidents into national trends. Inspiring a sense of paranoia and insecurity is not responsible behaviour. Warning people about the dangers of working illegally, and the possible consequences, is justified.

Personally, if someone showed up asking me about where I went after work, my work or living arrangements or my personal relationships, I's tell them it's none of their business unless they provided some identification showing that they had the authority to question me.

Can't we count rumours, hearsay and speculation as evidence? What is wrong with you people? Look, she turned me into a newt, but I got better. What more evidence do you need?
