I have just set up a Skype interview with the head of the English department for the above University. Does anyone know anything about this University at all Question I have seen nouthing in the forum about this University. They have advertised a full time teaching tenured track position 12,000 net each month. Pension plan, Savings Plan and health insurance. Any information on this school would be appreciated.

I have heard some good and some bad stories about working in Oaxaca. Thanks Again everyone.

Really? That's odd. I did a search for UMAR limiting it to the Mexico forum and it turned up 26 threads.

I actually know a fair amount about it--but rather than ramble on and on--what specific concerns do you have?

That's a very difficult question to answer. UMAR especially the Puerto Escondido Campus is a very small university located (literally) on the edge of Mexico. It's not really widely known enough to attract students from all over the country. UMAR has won some national distinctions, but I believe those were in areas that are located in Puerto Angel and Huatulco.
UMAR has a very rigorous academic system, but the local students are not well prepared by their previous education and struggle.
Since you are interviewing, I hope you are already aware of the fact that the job is for teaching non-majors who are required to take English. You should expect the entering freshman to have little or no English ability prior to arriving at UMAR and while I'm sure they'd like to learn English (have you ever met a Mexican who wouldn't?) it's not really a priority for them as they are very busy working hard to keep from failing out of university.
UMAR hires only qualified native speakers to teach English. But English is an add on required subject and not a priority for anyone apart from the English teachers.
If you are looking for a place where scholarship and English program are frequently combined into one sentence--Oaxaca is probably not the right place to be looking.
It does have very many other appealing elements, just not that.

I just had my interview with the director of the English program she did warn me that English wasn't a priority of the students. She also, said that English was going to be mandatory starting this fall in order to graduate from the University, meaning a passing grade of above 75%, so she feels encouraged from that stand point. Thank You Mother F for your help. Very Happy

You're welcome.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience in Poza Rica.
I'd be happy to answer any other questions you might have. And you might enjoy flipping through http://www.suneo.mx/SUNEO-La_VERDAD_de_los_HECHOS.pdf for some general stats about the SUNEO system.

The SUNEO system is quite different than I thought it would be high of the practical professions engineering, nursing etc. As far as Poza Rica is concerned a lesson well learned. You have helped me a lot Thanks Again...............................................................................................
