@Madhatter, if there is a specific mission i'd suspect that it'd be TEFL related, other than that i'm not aware of any other missions. Although, I thoroughly believe that it ought to be a universal rule, given the proper circumstances, that one's own mission in life should be focused towards self-improvement. (>.<)
Despite the faade of the "world's stage" I remain very Socratic in my view in that I know I know nothing. BUT I was able to sort through the Ha Noi traffic when I was there last.
In all honesty tho learning the Ha Noi traffic took awhile. At first, I had to close my eyes, while someone held me arm-to-arm, to cross the street. In retrospect, that must have been a riot for the locals.

Yeah, now you are getting the picture. The things like discrimination in VN are not going to be solved by any of us, this is their place, not ours, and most of this stuff is take it or leave it. Some of it appeals to some of our guys, like the cheap beer and the freedom to smoke most anywhere. If those known factors (like discrimination) work to your advantage, so be it. If they work against you, try to adapt to it, or find someplace that does not drive you crazy.
Those of us who are very sensitive about all this tend to exit stage left, and rather quickly. I think if we are honest with ourselves, we all find certain aspects of the experience unfair, yet some are unfairly in our favor. If you want to come over and do this for free because it is unfair that an English speaker gets 20 or 30 times the national wage for speaking his native language, (and throw away your other unfair advantages as well), I am sure most of us can point you to an institution that will accomodate you. |

Emily,
You've forwarded the wisdom through words of Mahatma Gandhi and Nikola Tesla using the very reliable Socratic method of sitting on the fence.
Do you have anything original to add? More to the point: what is your point?
Mark_in_Saigon among others have proffered practical, hands-on experienced replies to your original hijack.
Now what?
There's a famous saying............................................ in fact there are millions! |

@Madhater, Sorry M8. Is there anything original today? I certainly am not.
Personally, these discussions have lead me to wonder:

... if there [are] actual studies done on the effectiveness of EFL teachers, in developing and/or asian countries? What would such indicators include? Could such a study shed some light on the ignorant and grossly racist practices found within this industry? |
Hopefully, I'll be able to find something interesting to read from such inquiries.
BUT on a much lighter note, I found these while browsing the digital nebula:
-RMIT cultural students being the funkiest-fresh group ever!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySkKLSZtyzE&feature=related
-None of the schools that i've ever studied at could be this fresh even if we tried! Gratz!
-RMIT vs. Loggerz!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrsI9K8gSf0&feature=related
-All winners and AMAZING!
-I particularly like RMIT students' style of being funky-fresh with a dash of class. Watch closely to what one of the Loggerz's boys does after round one

It is not just the industry, it is the nation, the region, the people, whatever. The schools are just a reflection of the larger systems.
Some of these "practices" may actually be based on some truths. For example, it is widely known that the VN tend to feel that the VK treat their VN cousins with a certain disdain. Is that true 100% of the time? Certainly not. Is it true often enough to solidify the belief? Do your own survey.
Most importantly, right or wrong, it is what it is, we are not going to change these folks, instead, we just have to understand the way they are (to the extent we even can) and adapt to the realities of the way they behave.
I think the VK have certain privileges relating to business and property ownership here (again, discrimination) that most of us do not enjoy. Personally, if I was VK, I might give teaching English a pass and try something else where the racism/discrimination worked in my favor. Getting all worked up about this stuff defeats the real reward for being here: happiness. |

Ty for the advice, MarkIS.
Actually, I have been thinking of doing volunteer work in VN. Would you happen to have any info. that you could direct my attention to? Itd be much appreciated.
I was also wondering if you could share some of your insights on the feasibility of doing both volunteer and paid work in VN...is it possible to do both and maintain an overall "happy" life in VN, at least for a year or two?
Ty in advance for any info. you have to share.
