When a male is wearing nail polish, it might be even more interesting!

Those wingnut religous police freak me out! They are perverts more than anything else...following women around all day... what an odd job they have....plain and simple... harrassment.... the Saudi woman knew it too! Good for her...women should not have to put up with their nonsense...I wish more women would stand up to these weirdos. |

Are they asking her to cover her hair or is it about the nails? Not that it matters; as she said ... they are there to advise, not to harass. |

A couple things stood out for me. One was that the police very effectively sided with the woman, pushing the Obnoxious One off to the side and went into Middle East intervention mode. They made no attempt to stop her from filming the whole thing when she even told them she was doing it.
The other thing was that this young woman reminded me so much of my ex-students. The stereotype of the Submissive Arab Woman is just that. Anyone who has watched how the women of Cairo deal with their cultural restrictions (as we see them) knows that they are tough as nails. The Gulf women are in a stricter system, but especially with education they are learning how to stand up to it. I loved how she pointed out that according to the religion, he shouldn't even be looking at her to check out her lipstick or fingernails. He shouldn't be staring and following any woman. That is a sin on his part!!

One would think. I remember a friend was told to close the window shades because a man could see a women who was sitting inside an upstairs room with her hair uncovered. You would think that he just would not have to look, but women are usually the ones who are considered to be in the wrong in Saudi Arabia.
I would hope that this discussion would not encourage any EFL teachers to get involved with the struggle for feminist rights in Saudi Arabia. That should be left up to Saudi women. Any woman who encourages such ideas would soon find out that there are many Saudi women who would turn her in as an instigator; and some women might even lie about her ideas, rather than take the blame themselves. |

Good advice. Not just in Saudi, but in all countries.

Dear Gulezar,
I agree completely - just one addition: "That should be left up to Saudi women."
And, believe it or not, some Saudi men.
Regards,
John |

That woman does have grit. I think a lot of Saudi women do. Many of the Saudi women students I had in the US were a force to contend with. It is their battle and not ours as Western women, but I'll be quietly cheering from the sidelines for sure. |

John, absolutely, the society will need buy in from both genders. I agree that many Saudi women, and many other Muslim women, do have immense spirit and heart ... and wisdom. |

My earlier statement regarding these religous police may have been unnecessarily derogatory. I guess it just underscores my feelings about what they are doing...tarnishing the image of Islam.
I find these Mutawa always manage to instill a negative image of Islam. I have never read or heard anything good about what they do. It seems they do more harm than good. I am left wondering, what else they do besides harrass people. Are there any positives to their organization? Or is this 'harrasment' suppose to be a good thing to remind people not to stray from the righteous path. I guess I will never fully understand.
I think this 'organization' is need of a total make over. |

According to the policeman who interrogated bin Laden's wives, Amal, the Yemeni, was interesting and headstrong, while, "The other wives (Saudis) didn't say much. They were boring". |

The one thing that is bothersome about this video is the fact that it is sourced from Memri on every version that I have seen posted in various places. They are a very disreputable anti-Arab, anti-Muslim propaganda site.
The woman says in the tape that she is posting it to Facebook and such. Has anyone seen any evidence of that?
While the Memri relationship doesn't necessarily mean that it has been faked... as it could be that they just picked it up since it fits their MO... still...

MEMRI's,
Light the corners of my mind.
Misty, water color MEMRI's,
Of the way we were...
Sorry, but I just couldn't resist. After reading VS's post, I got that song into my head and couldn't get it out!
