OP, please update us as you are updated. I agree that the seizure itself may have been illegal. The relevant police/customs departments have every right to inspect our travel documents, including passports, but they should have to have a reason to confiscate them (such as to affix a new visa or permit). I second the call to contact your consulate regarding this, especially if you weren't provided with a detailed receipt.

I don't have much of a personal investment in China, and police action as described might be enough to inspire me to walk away, especially if it comes from the local bureau assigned to my safety and welfare. Hopefully, I'd take the time to add up all of the positives and negatives and compare the results to other destinations, but I'd certainly entertain the thought of walking away.

You are required by law (Chinese law and U.S.-Chinese visa/passport law) to turn over your passport to authorized government entities. This includes the police.

False, untrue statement. You are only required by law to show your passport when requested by police, not hand it over, unless you are in the office itself and they are processing a visa.

Given the current situation, at least in Beijing (I can't comment on other parts of China), I'd rather refrain from saying anything more about this on a public forum, which may or may not be read/watched by ...

There are checks in progress. That is public knowledge here. Ongoing for 100 days I've been told, starting on or around May 15th.

Anyone with questions or wanting updates on my own situation is welcome to PM me and I'll try to respond.

Thanks to those who PMed me and sorry, you-know-who, it was never my intention to, well, you know ...
