Recently I have been offered a position with a juku. However, it is my first position teaching English, so I'm a little bit unsure what to expect.
Most of the time I will be teaching at the juku itself, however the manager mentioned that it could be possible to put me into a position that had me serving as an ALT at a local school. I guess the juku contracts English teachers out?
I guess that's actually my question. I've had several eikaiwa and juku mention that they send teachers in as ALTs .. is this common? Do schools often opt for private institutions to provide ALTs rather than JET or contracting one themselves? Is it better or worse to get a position at a juku as an ALT, as opposed to through the public school itself? |

I've heard eikaiwas sometimes do it. Couldn't tell you how often, but I suspect that among the hundreds to thousands of eikaiwas, the percentage is low.
Whether they do it or not, keep in mind that your visa needs to allow you to do that sort of thing, or you will need to get special permission from immigration.
A couple of valuable links of information to heed regarding any ALT job:

Almost anytime you add a third party or intermediary, things get more complicated and generally worse. Getting hired through a juku or dispatch company to be an ALT means that communication will be more difficult and your pay will be lower.
Getting hired directly by the school system itself is generally considered best and the JET program a close second. The JET program acts as an intermediary only during the hiring process; once you are hired your contract is through the school system (usually a local Board of Education) and all communication is direct. |
