My husband and I are considering just showing up to a SE Asian country this August to find TEFL jobs.
We do not currently have our certification, but would seek it out there, or seek positions not requiring that certification.
Should we get extended visas before going? or go with the 30-day upon arrival? (taking that further...how do we buy our plane tickets for this? Can we get away with a one-way ticket?)
Is it realistic to arrive in Aug., find certification and a job for Oct?
What paperwork should we have in hand? (background checks? diplomas? transcripts?) - Yes, we both have BAs. |

Speaking for Japan...
You cannot get a visa unless you actually have a job. I don't understand the "30-day upon arrival" point you made. What is your nationality? Many get 90 days or 3 months upon initial landing with just a passport in hand.
No, IMO you cannot usually get away with a one-way ticket. That's the airline's problem, and unless you have a visa, they will usually refuse to let you board.
Certification is usually not required here. Won't hurt.
Possible to land in Aug and get jobs for Oct, but IMO you will still have to hustle. Not the best hiring period, and you may end up with conversation school jobs.
Bring original or scanned copies of your college degrees, plus sealed transcripts as a safety net. If you have reference letters, have them sealed. |

It really does depend on the where. ASSUMING you are American:
China, Vietnam, Laos - you need a visa to enter even as a tourist.
You'd need another trip to an adjacent country to get a new visa to work.
Korea- 90 days on arrival. You can find work and do a quick trip to Guam for your first E2 work visa.
Thailand - 30 days on arrival. You will need a border run to obtain a new visa to stay longer. It is possible to change your status from tourist to work visa in the country provided you have 21 days remaining on your stay.
Taiwan - 30 days and then you have to leave to get a new visa or entry stamp.
In ALL cases you should bring your original degree, transcripts and a CBC.
In some cases, like Korea, you will need copies of your degree to be apostilled as well as an apostilled FBI check. Taiwan also requires your CBC and degree to be authenticated and legalized for international use.
Document authentication is not required for Thailand, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan but you should bring the originals.
From your Dates I am thinking you are looking at the mid year break in Thailand to find your new job. It is realistic. If you were looking at places other than Thailand your dates are off.
IF you have an actual visa in your passport you won't have much hassle at the airport. IF you try to fly on a one way and 30-day visa waiver then onward/return passage IS a requirement.
Buy a one-way ticket to Asia AND a REFUNDABLE ticket home. Cash in the return ticket after you arrive. Provided it was paid for with a credit card your refund (credit back to your card) should be processed in a few days. Cash refunds take 30-60 days to get processed (depending on the airline).
Note: It is often cheaper to get a discounted return ticket than a one way. Simply throw the unused part away.

K-land- 90 days on arrival. You can find work and do a quick trip to Guam for your first E2 work visa. |
I know we are not supposed to discuss K-land on this board(pm sent)..but is this meaning that you get an agreement by going door-to-door..then rather than having the employer go through the process of getting you an E2 and locking you in..you do it yourself? Does this give us (the prospective employees) much more bargaining power?
Thank you for sharing the cold hard facts again tttompatz! |
