The question is, how do the Brazilians and Portuguese refer to their dialects when speaking in Portuguese? I wouldn't be surprised if the Brazilians called them Portuguese and European Portuguese or something like that.
|
Checking with the half dozen Brazilians in my office they all say it's the other way around if they're trying to make the distinction: "Brazilian Portuguese" and "Portuguese".
The one Portuguese person in the office is currently accusing them of all speaking Spanish. |

| Secondly, I think we should be using the 'spoken as a first language' column not the 'Total English Speakers' columm. I didn't do the math, but my guess is that America will come back out on top. [/img] |
Strictly speaking, given that we're talking about English speakers, L1 English speakers in the US number less than 1000. The rest of them speak some form of gibberish as far as I can tell. It may have been related at one point, but it now sounds like someone trying to gargle a couple of stoats.
Carry on. |

| Well if this data proves one thing it's that the British are much better at teaching English that you Americans. Out of all the countries you've conquered the only one you've successfully spread English to is The Philippines :p |

Us "Americans" are no more monolithic than "you" Brits. I still, even after years of living outside of the US, answer "Where are you from?" with an automatic, "Texas!"
Also, in the words of the infamous Davy Crockett, "Y'all can go to hell, I'm goin' to Texas!"

Wow, good to see the spirit of Imperialism is still alive and well with Brits. |

I'm just saying you could have given a little back. If you conquer a country, take its oil and force it to buy over priced weapons then the least you could do is give a free English lesson or two |

We do. Usually sentences like, "CEASE MOVEMENT" "GET ON THE GROUND" "SIGN THIS STATUS OF FORCES AGREEMENT." |

| If I say "I'm from Devon" the response is usually Daburin?. If I say I'm from the UK or Great Britain, I'm generally met with blank stares. So I generally just say I'm from Igirisu. |

Ah, Devon. I used to have an athletic shirt from a fake naval academy which was fictionally located in Devon.
I had a coworker from Cardiff once who was something of a Welsh nationalist, and the idea that he was from "Igirisu" drove him insane. |

Somehow I think that if Americans did try to teach them English, they'd get yelled at for culture rape or something. Can't win. |
