Anyone hear of a shooting near Eid Compound last night? I heard a Saudi was involved after bringing a gun and shooting in the street.
The police came, there was a lot of shooting, and then there was some kind of Mexican stand off which lasted an hour. How it ended I've no idea.
British embassy website:
Kindly, note we are aware of an incident near Eid compound Yesterday 9th June involving a shooting. The Saudi authorities have arrested an individual in connection with this. There are no reports of any causalities.
Regards,
The Consular Team
British Embassy, Riyadh
Anyone got any information?

Is this news? Riyadh is full of guns and gun crime. The only thing that makes this one news is that it has made it to the news. Usually the 'see no evil hear no evil speak no evil' principle is followed unless it is impossible to hush it up which is probably the case with this one here. I am looking for jobs in Saudi now, but not in Riyadh. No way. It was bad enough when I left. It must have gotten a lot worse since then. Interestingly enough, some of my friends love Riyadh. Maybe they are the ones shooting around? Come on, guys. Stop fooling around. |

Not sure there's a lot of gun crime but there's definitely crime especially in Riyadh - http://xrdarabia.org/2012/03/18/crime-wave-sweeps-riyadh/

I know one guy who was held up and heard about some who were nearly held up. Most of them seem to be Africans in or near poor neighborhoods. There are usually at least 3 of them. One or two will come up to you with knives there is usually at least one or more not too far off in case you do decide to fight them.
The funny thing is, they are usually polite as long as you cooperate with them. They even apologize, saying they are poor and you are not. |
I guess we are getting off topic and probably should have another thread but you're right in that the place does seem to be getting a bit more dangerous.
I imagine they probably are so polite that they offer to return your borrowed handkerchief after wiping off your blood from their blade!
