|
|
Hello Everyone!
I just wanted to ask, do you think a recent UK graduate has any chance of getting a university job in China, specifically in Qingdao or Dalian?
...and is there anything I could add, or do to make myself a more attractive candidate?
A little information about me: -
- Degree in Fine Art
- Currently doing my CELTA
- Native Speaker, 23, Male and Caucasian
- Studying Mandarin
- 2 years part-time English tutoring experience
- Have done voluntary experience in both a Junior and Secondary school setting (Teacher & Teaching assistant)
Thank you
P.s. Do you think I stand a good chance? |

Fantastic! Do I just email the universities I am interested in with my CV then? As I have heard too many horror stories about using agents and recruitment firms. |

I've worked in both QD and DL and I think your quals would get you a job in either city.
QD is possibly the better bet as far as environment is concerned - especially if you can get a job near the beach. Further inland it gets hot in summer and doesn't have the afternoon sea breeze you get down by the waterfront.
Watch DL as many unis and vocationals have moved to Lushun (the old Port Arthur) which is a about 50 mins from DL itself.
If you teach at Lushun but are accommodated in the city, you should factor in 2x50 min bus rides per teaching day.
The hiring season for 1 Sept start is passing its peak now so don't delay on job hunting.
QD schools are felt to pay less as it is seen as a desirable location for FTs. |

Yeah! I really want to be near the beach; is there any Universities you would recommend near there?
Oh right! Didn't know about that regarding Dalian, thanks for the heads-up. |

Go to Wikipedia entry for Qingdao and on the sidebar click on Education.
You should get these schools listed:
Ocean University of China (formerly Ocean University of Qingdao), the primary university of the specialty in China
Petroleum University of China, Qingdao campus
Qingdao University
Qingdao University of Science and Technology
Qingdao Technological University
Shandong University of Economics and Trade
Qingdao Hotel and Management College
Qingdao Agricultural University
Shandong University of Science and Technology, Qingdao campus
Hotel Management College is a fair way from the downtown and beach so don't prioritise this outfit.
I suggest you get into conversation with as many as you can (of the remainder) and once into conversation find out where your accom and teaching location(s) will be.
The Ocean U is probably the number one school in the city, but part of the campus is now a few kms inland.
Look for actual 'FT Vacancies' link on the school websites. 'Foreign Affairs Office' link is also worthwhile if no vacancy link is visible.
PM me if you need further help on QD or DL

Don't be too coy and send all the required documents on first contact.
You're definitely a perfect candidate for an abundant of jobs in China.
You can look on this website for jobs and the echinacities website is pretty good for job postings too. |

OP if you are still interested in Dalian I know the Dalian Maritime U is still in the city.
They have so much specialised plant at their current site I doubt that they will move to Lushun.
I did 3 semesters there about 8-9 years ago and found it the perfect set up.
PM me if you decide to apply there. |

I've just located a job ad for a Lushun (near Dalian) school on seriousteachers.com and I note they offer accommodation at both Dalian and on-campus at Lushun.
Living at Lushun would mean avoiding the 50 mins each way bus trip.
That said I note the ad says 'hotel-type' accommodation on-campus and that would be a turn off as that basically means a double BR with attached shower and toilet if my exp at other schools is anything to go by. |
