Hi everyone!

"A certificate in foreign language teaching"

This is for a university position and I just wanted to know what they want regarding the "certificate": CELTA, Trinity, or can I get away with a weekend TEFL course?

Thanks guys

I think they would expect a CELTA or Trinity (as they know the names) but you might be lucky with a (useless) weekend course. If you have the chance, a CELTA would bring you so much more mileage and training.

A short course will do as long as there was some class presentation component.
In class I found my basic cert useful as a personal confidence-builder rather than any of the content.
Just having an idea of what to do on that first day faced with what seems like a sea of expectant students.

You'd be surprised how many are teaching using a simple "weekend course"--and nothing else-- legally!

unless they specifically ask for a celta or delta or trinity, you should
be fine sending them a cert from "bob's burger bar and language skool."

Hmmm, another thread to refer to when people wonder why salaries are "so low" . . .

TEFL is as good as any other brand name; as was mentioned above it's the content of the program that matters. But what can you get away with, agreed, just about anything.

Yeah, I am currently doing the CELTA part-time. When is the hiring seasons for universities exactly? September and January? So should I be email them a few months before this? Thanks.

Right now is about the tail end of the hiring season for September starts. You're not totally out of luck just yet, but in the middle of July everyone will disappear from their offices and won't return under ANY circumstances. Emails will go unanswered as well during that period of time.

For February/March starts, you should start sniffing around after the first week of October and ideally have something locked up in November or the beginning of December. It's possible to do it later than that, but you'll be choosing from crap schools and schools with dodgy FAOs.

Lloyduss,

I would send out your CV immediately, as most Chinese universities expect new teachers to be in situ by the start of the academic year in September. During the summer break, you may get little,or no, response.

I have worked in China and can strongly recommend Qingdao.

It's okay as I'm currently doing my CELTA course so I'll be applying early next year. I'm guessing recruitment happens around March/April for September starts?

Thanks everyone for your input!

Agreed, that's all they want otherwise they would have specified 'CELTA/Trinity-TESOL or MEd' (or something like that).

Nevertheless, I recommend you do a CELTA or Trinity-TESOL if you have a spare four weeks.

It will cost you about 1000 but you'll more than make that back over the first year as you can secure much better jobs than with a dodgy weekend cert.
