There is an American woman named Linda who used to operate a small English book exchange in Beyoglu, just 20 meters down a small street from the large night club called Babylon. I don't know if it is still open in the afternoons, but for many years she and her friends were there to let people swap books and lend free advice. Personally, I chose not to socialize much with expats in Istanbul, but in the beginning I found her assistance to be extremely helpful. She referred me to an expat with excellent and cheap apartments for rent, for example. Also, you can drop in to any Western-style bar in Taksim, such as the Irish Pub, and find plenty of foreigners to mingle with. I wouldn't worry too much about finding foreigners-in my experience avoiding them was far more difficult than finding them! |

Be very careful in socializing with foreigners in the Taksim area of Istanbul. A lot of the so called "Expats" are actually English teachers looking for work and hang out at pubs and Turkish cafes asking other so called Expats for work. They are not expats but the unemployed from the UK. Actually I have been asked for some pocket money from many of them...mostly young 20 - 30 year olds..to help them out with food and shelter. My advice is be very careful with whom you meet and never disclose where you work in Istanbul cause they might try to find a way to take your job! |

I suppose that school location in Istanbul it is a very closely guarded secret. Once the tricky "expat" learns your place of employment, he need only scoot on over there, find your boss, and say, "John Smith wouldn't give me any money for food today. Can I have his job please?" |

Yes, I know he is and does. It is unfortunate that his trolling has thus far been allowed to continue. |
