So, due to a possible job offer, may be moving to Osaka in the near future. Other than short visits, have never spent much time in the city and was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions about where to live. I know this is an incredibly general request and depends on a lot of different factors, but...

If possible, would like to be in an area somewhat similar to the Suginami-ku area of Tokyo---especially Nakano/Koenji/Asagaya. I know they're different cities, but is there a similar area in Osaka?

Thanks!

Hmmm...don't know those places in Tokyo to compare it to Oaksa so what are those places like? For exmpale what is Suginoe-ku like? Is it busy and urban or quite and suburban or something like that? Is it famous for being convenient for transport? Confused

If you are going to work in a particular place then it is more helpful because then we can tell you. Cool

The problem with this is that most people who can recommend places to live in Osaka don't know a ton about those places and why you liked them, so you need to be more specific to get good advice.

I'd pretty much just avoid Nishinari-ku as that's terrible. A lot of foreigners wind up living in some dumps by Bentencho.

You can always commute to work too. You can get some pretty affordable places in Hirakata 枚方市, and still be able to take the rapid into Osaka.

I really liked Hirakata, it was a bit more relaxed than Osaka, had tons of young people to hang with, and a decent amount to do/shopping.

Those areas are pretty busy, but away from the stations, relatively quiet and residential. Koenji is a nice mix of shitamachi and a trendier area like Shimo-Kitazawa---and pretty cheap (well, housing is expensive, but there are tons of cheap izakaya & shops) with a really nice, relaxed (for Tokyo) vibe.

Thanks!

Confused Bit confused...pretty busy, away from the stations, quiet and residential???

Ermm.... some places in Osaka are a bit quiet like Senri, near a terminal station but mostly quiet in the surrounding areas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Senri-Ch%C5%AB%C5%8D_Station

Maybe Ikeda, which is quite nice... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikeda,_Osaka

Or Toyonaka, between Ikeda and the city centre.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyonaka,_Osaka

Actually that includes Senri, too.

Or maybe you might like some of the places on the HAnkyu line that go into Hyogo. Bit difficult to say... Hope this helps you start your search good luck! Cool

Well I guess you would like America Mura but it might be expensive to live there.

You may prefer Sannomiya or Kyoto city but then you would have a longer commute.
