Hello,

I 've been offered a position with both in Beijing. I know the choice would seem obvious - Wall Street pay more (for more teaching hours) and seem to have a relatively good reputation with teachers. EF company schools don't sounds too bad either though, unlike some of the franchises. I have felt more comfortable in my dealings with EF though, and they have come across as more pleasant and used to dealing with newcomers to China.

I would really like to hear from anyone who has experience of both!

Thanks!

I think the majority of EF teachers would switch to Wall Street if given the oppourtunity, because it pays better, and you don't have to teach children or do any clown-show marketing activities.

Most EF teachers are first year teachers, most Wall Street teachers are not. What does that tell you?

As long as Wall St is a company-owned outlet I would go with them.
I feel that the variability among EF outlets is due to the franchise model and not enough supervision of franchisees.
If you are young and can present yourself in corporate mode there would be career options at WS longer term.
You are very much on show and all classrooms and one on one teaching spaces are glass walled.
Almost a missionary atmosphere in the branch I visited.

Gold fish in gold fish bowls.
Around they go...again and again and again.

They are both corporate ESL sweatshops. Isn't there a third choice?

If you get into a good EF franchise then you will receive quite a bit of training (very helpful for a new teacher) not just from DOS there but also Cambridge TKT training. You will also put in less hours (except perhaps in the summer season).

I agree with babala. If you find a decent centre with a supportive DOS then EF can be good place for a newbie to start in China

Doesn't EF require you to work 6 days per week during the peak periods?

Both firms are ideal for anybody coming to China for the 1st time.
They will certainly provide you with invaluable experience (mainly bad) but you will be on the ground here, employed (sic) and be able to find a much better position.
Do not expect the earth from these outfits (especially the franchises) but treat them as part of a learning experience.
Good luck.
