This is a highly regimented society you're entering. Anything other than 'yes' 'no' or 'normal' or a number where indicated, is superfluous.
FTs are a commodity not a brand in China. |

| Yes, I have seen the form. I was referring to the medical records I will be bringing on my own so that, should I need treatment, the doctor can take my history into account. |

| I was a boy scout and am an optimist, so just in case. That's part of why I'm thinking executive summary -- my file is inches thick going back decades, most of which would be irrelevant anyway. |

Yeah...summary would be a good idea. Use simple words. Bring the file just in case somebody wants to pretend they will read it or understand it. |

Pfft. I've gone full monty on stage with a ... full monty, if you catch my drift, in front of a full house which (granted, I only later found out) included my parents. I don't think I have any bodily modesty left if I ever had any in the first place.
They'd flown in to surprize me during previews -- but *I* wasn't the one surpized. |

If you go to a regular Dr here in PRC use the medical history to brief a bright student and have him/her accompany you.
As others have said, you will not be seen by kindly Marcus Welby.
I had acupuncture about 5 yrs ago and it was done in what I would call the waiting room. There would have been at least 6 others looking on not counting my Chinese student friend and the Dr's daughter who was a medical student somewhere. |

To revisit the pay day issue. Many people have expressed severe doubts as to whether you will receive a months pay just as you arrive. This has been countered with the OP's insistence that it is a done deal. Clearly, someone is wrong.
So lets clarify.
OP, you are utterly mistaken/mislead on this issue. You have many experienced people who know how China works telling you YOU WILL NOT BE PAID IN ADVANCE ON ARRIVAL. This is not up for debate, it is an absolute fact. You might want to consider, employers have been known in the past, to exaggerate these things - contracts, promises mean nothing, just get him over first of all |

With all due respect, I now have everything in writing and signed, and while it was felt that there was some 'ambiguity' with the wording "starting the month of arrival", there is very little wiggle room left in "on 20.08.2012".
Being the good boy scout that I am, I will have (and have always planned for) reserves available to me but do not expect to need them. I will be out of pocket for startup costs for a week, since I am going over early to make sure the apartment is appropriate, properly furnished and stocked, with all utils including 'Net functional.
Let's move on, shall we? |

Your medical records? The doctors MAY speak English, but they won't understand your medical records. They won't even care about them. |

I went in for surgery in a hospital in Jiangsu about a year and a 1/2 ago.
The doctor just asked me what I wanted and when.
I was never asked for ID or previous records. They just asked for the money upfront and did the surgery.
The surgery was fine, but as I was checking out I noticed that all of the paperwork does not have my correct name, history, or address. |

With the greatest of respect, this is China. In China, 'everything in writing and signed' means nothing. Absolutely nothing. There is no ambiguity in that statement, absolutely none. No matter what you have in writing and who has signed it, it means nothing. Absolutely nothing.
Those of us who have been here a while have, through an often difficult process starting with disbelief and morphing through anger, bitterness, then hysterical laughter, and finally, if we're lucky, ending in a kind of dejected resignation tempered with a little humour, finally accepted that fact.
That is what we are trying to tell you. A miracle may yet occur, and all of their promises may be kept, but we want you to be aware that maybe, just maybe, they wont. Maybe, just maybe, when you are thousands of miles from the safety of home, and everything you have relied on to keep you sane and healthy is but a distant memory, and you are surrounded by people who either don't speak a word you understand or at least can pretend they don't, and where the rules are like quicksand under your feet, you will be able to smile and say' what the heck! This is China!' Good luck with it all. |
