We tried - many people with experience in China have told you with no ambiguity YOU WILL NOT BE PAID THAT FIRST MONTH It is a message that has come from many angles, all with experience. You chose to ignore it, trusting in the contract despite the fact you have been told it is worthless.
So be it
let's move on |

Take your medical records, and then when you arrive in China, shop around until you find a trusted primary-care medical provider. Set up a consultation and Skype your home-country doctor in -- the Chinese medical facility should have a qualified medical interpreter handy -- to discuss your medical history and concerns. Then, if problem arise in the future, your new health-care provider in China will be prepared to treat you while taking into account your full medical narrative.
As far as the payment, a contract is a contract in China and you will certainly be paid as promised. This is optional, but maybe you could request this payment in advance. Could they wire it to you in your home country? This would help you to be prepared with more reserves on arrival. It would also help you on the trip over in case you want to buy some snacks or a paperback book in the airport. It can't hurt to ask. |

Thanks for the laugh. You are either taking the piss, or you do not know what you are talking about. |

And maybe, just maybe, the plane will crash over the Pacific.
Or maybe, just maybe, it's all been some big joke and there is no job there.
Maybe, just maybe, I've just been winding everyone up myself.
Platitudes do not help. Concrete advice will (and no, "expect to get screwed" is *not* concrete advice.)
I have detailed (some of the) steps I have taken to protect myself.
If you have other steps to suggest I'm wililng to listen.
If not, and all you want to do is rag on Chinese employers, I heartily invite you to start a thread to discuss that topic.
My thanks to all who have offered constructive advice. It's all in the hands of whomever decides on the work visa now. |

Did you not read where I stated I would have funds available anyway?
Perhaps I used too many big words when I wrote that?
In any case, I recommended moving on *days* ago... |

This was my plan up to the Skype session -- the problem there is the 12 hour time difference. I'll suggest it anyway, I should be going in Tuesday or so to get my copies of the various paperwork and the chest film.

Meh, I'll pop for anything of that sort, though I am not a big snacker. I'm going to hook up with an actor friend and her daughter during my layover in L.A. -- I've got 8 hours on the ground there (my choice) since I haven't seen them in forever. I'll probably cook lunch for her and Beaner, and then Jenn'll buy me dinner so I don't see hunger on the ground being a big deal, and I will probably pack some snack bars or something to nibble. And I have found the complete Wheel of Time series and my Tom Clancy collection, so between that and a last run through the Rosetta Stone 1-5 lessons, and a couple hundred gigs of movies I've been ripping to my second HD, I don't think I'll lack for distraction.
Thanks for your input! |

''In any case, I recommended moving on *days* ago''
I know you did, I was being facetious.
''Did you not read where I stated I would have funds available anyway?''
I did read that - would you care to point out where I mentioned your back up fund? I have no memory of doing so. My point, the point made by many others, is you are foolish to believe in this contract and to believe you are insulated from the surprises ahead.
''Perhaps I used too many big words when I wrote that?''
Sonny boy, sorry to break the news to you, but where as I am sure you have many skills, areas in which you may well overshadow me, based on what I have seen, intellect is not one of them.
A smart man would heed advice proffered. The only advice you are willing to countenance, is that which agrees with your erroneous preconceptions. You have chosen to spurn the experience and wisdom of your betters in this field
So be it.

And so your advice is to be facetious?

Could you please quote me as saying that I have that belief? Because I believe that if I felt insulated from surprizes, I would not (for example) feel the need for such a fund... That I have stated that I do feel that need rather seems to contradict your characterization of me.

Demonstrably not true: check the thread for the train discussion.
But I seem to have missed anywhere in this thread where you actually *offered* advice instead of just saying "you're wrong" with no indication what else I could be doing instead.
Now, surely a person of your great intellect will have wonderful suggestions about how better to prepare for my trip and structure it and my contract, as weill as conduct myself once in-country, so one has to wonder why you do not offer those suggestions and instead ragging on me and the entire Chinese people (as well as anyone else you feel does not share your penchant for complaint without resolution.)
Or perhaps I just didn't see your advice -- would you kindly summarize the concrete suggestions you have offered?

How was your flight?
Oh, here's 11,000 RMB.
Have you had lunch?
let's move on, indeed. |

I really hate these threads that degrade into sniping, but I thought I might throw in a point or two here.
Chinese often have trouble with prepositions and assumptions. Is it possible that they mean being paid FROM 20.08.2012? To them it's confirmation of your start date.
Or possibly they are going to consider this a loan to be paid back. Even if the contract doesn't state this, the school could be considering this an advance on first month salary. To a westerner this would not be typical thinking but these contracts are not written by westerners.
I'm not saying this is what will happen but don't be surprised if it does. Some posters do go overboard on the criticism and snide remarks but try to remember that the ones here with experience are more use to dealing with the mindset and can often offer alternate interpretations that will seem odd to anyone who has not worked with Chinese employers. |

The language says "you will receive your first check for 9000 RMB plus 2000 RMB on 20.08.2012"

Actually, the discussion that lead to that language suggested it was by way of a signing bonus, and they are making an exception to have it available to me when I land rather than with my first month's pay since I am going to be paying for the apartment and associated deposits, etc. myself.

As I have said, I hope for the best, but plan for the worst, others' unfounded impresssions of me notwithstanding. |
