How do you get tricked into going to a foreign land to work?

I chose this option. In my case, I was sent to China to do some totally unrelated work involving software development. I quit my job in Canada, gave up my apartment and put everything in storage. After I arrived in China, I got an e-mail telling me the job had evaporated, the contract cancelled and that I should just fend for myself. So, I got a job teaching and just stayed. In a sense, I was tricked into coming here.

What worries me are the thousands of people who have been tricked into working here. Sure not large percentagly but all the more reason for me to be careful and not end up in that catagory later on.

How do you get tricked into going to a foreign land to work? I don't see that happening, unless you're a real half-wit. Please explain.

I have met a number of teachers over the years that were told they would be in Dalian, Beijing, Shenyang, Qingdao etc. teaching small groups of adults but ended up getting farmed to smaller places teaching large groups of kids because the job suddenly disappeared.

I want to say something about that. I believe that in the U.S., ABC are often treated by whites as being foreign. People assume that they can't speak English and so on. So a lot overcompensate by separating themselves emotionally from their ancestral homeland, taking on a thick California accent, avoiding China natives, etc. So when they get to China, they are predisposed to not like it. Which is fine, because the locals resent them greatly for being American.

Speaking from my own personal experiences as a Chinese-American, this couldn't be less true. In my entire life in the US, not a single person (other than some foreign tourists), has ever assumed I couldn't speak English. Furthermore, I have never felt like I was treated as a foreigner. This could be attributed to where I live, where it is very multicultural. Maybe if I lived in another part of the US it would be different? I don't know. Nevertheless, having traveled throughout the country, I have never encountered anything of the sort.

The worst forms of discrimination I have ever faced have all been in China (in particular when job hunting). Although, to give the Chinese credit, 95% of the people I've met have treated me extremely well, even treating me like a celebrity or returning hero (which can get very uncomfortable). I'm not too sure what people are talking about when they speak of anti-Chinese American sentiment in China, when in fact, it feels like the opposite for me. Then again, maybe I am oblivious to it (and they are speaking about it behind my back). Plus, I've only lived in one Chinese city so far so perhaps I would face that sentiment elsewhere.
