You'd better talk to the airline. They're the ones that may or may not let you board the plane without the right visa or ticket.

Agree.

With a visa I doubt you'd have any trouble from the airline. I've never been asked at a Chinese border/airport for proof of onward travel or sufficient funds etc.

If you do find yourself being refused a boarding pass at the airport, ask for a manager. If they still won't give you a boarding pass, they will probably suggest an onward flight. If you have room on a credit card, buy a full priced, fully refundable ticket to somewhere else from China within the time limits of your visa. Then promptly cancel that booking upon arrival in China. I had to do that for a trip to Europe once but I really doubt you'll have to in your situation.

In the U.S., I've never been questioned about a return ticket. In China, I've never been questioned about my tickets. It's just the usual probing look at my passport (as if they've never seen a U.S. passport before). When traveling to other countries, I've never been asked about a return ticket.

The most probing question I've ever gotten anywhere was at Gatwick Airport when the immigrations guy asked me "Is there any reason why you shouldn't be allowed into the country?" (I knew that he was joking). It was like something out of Monty Python.

I had the same worry when I came a few months ago. I had no problems. The recuiter told me to talk to a manager and have them call the local consulat for confirmation if they didn't believe you. She also offered to buy me a refundable ticket out of china and then cancel it while I was on the flight. but as I said, I worried over nothing.

I was questioned when I flew with China Eastern about 6 years ago. I had a Z visa and was returning back to China after a holiday back home. I had to produce my credit card before they would let me on the flight.

Yeah it's a all a bit daft, like you're gonna tell them... even IF you had a reason that you shouldn't be allowed into a country ?!

You mean they weren't joking? I told the guy that I couldn't think of any reasons, but if they called my mother, she's probably think of something.

The guy said that I could use the phone.

I waited for my passport to be returned.

--- Are you going to give me my passport?

"I'm waiting for you to get your mother on the line."

--- Well, I can't. She's dead.

"Were you convicted or otherwise implicated?"

--- Implicated in what?

"Here's your passport. Have a good trip." The guy kept a straight face, but I was laughing. It was so absurd. Every time I fly into Gatwick or Heathrow (on other business, not on my way to China), there's always an absurd, humorous scene with somebody. I think the Brits enjoy playing with the Yanks.

It wont be immigration that question the single ticket, it will be the airlines themselves as many carriers have a policy that states you must have a return or onward ticket. I think if you travel on a Z visa, carrying your contract etc, it isnt likely to ever be a problem. On a 30 day tourist visa it may be ... depending upon the airlines etc. I believe they could be liable otherwise. A colleague of mine got stung by Qantas airlines on this before.

Why the ridicule?
If you answered 'No' a mark would have been made on the card that effect.
If later, you came to the attention of UK police who then checked with your home police and you had a record - Whammo!
It's the other side of the arrest warning. 'You do not have to say anything etc'.

I was questioned once at a US airport about my one-way flight. I said I was going overland to Vietnam. I get nervous when I fly so I was kind of shrill about it and they didn't give me any more trouble after that.

Perhaps the airline sees an opportunity for it to sell you another ticket.

May be this is a bit naive.... but if you have a visa, this gives you a "right or authorization" to enter China based on any visa conditions (having a return ticket may be one of them). If you are given a visa then the Chinese officials will let you in (subject to any specific conditions in the visa) and the airline therefore will not be concerned about onward flights.
