I left a High School job in Texas after ten years of service. No thank you's from the admin. Many thank you's from the students and parents. I too just left a Chinese Uni position after faithfully serving them for a year. No thank yous from the admin, some students threw me a party.

I'm glad my bosses didn't give me a going away party or a false sounding, "Thanks for working for us"

Happens everywhere my friend..

Less said the better. A graceful exit without excessive language is preferred.

Not rubbish, just too defensive, and the supposed appreciation shown was over-the-top.

You should perhaps have a look at the language you used. The tone is quite obvious to anyone, and we are english teachers after all. I took my opinion from the language you used in your post... I don't know you and don't pretend to.

Exactly what I was thinking. I've met some people from this forum in person over the past few years and from what I've seen the way people write on here usually reflects their attitude in real life.

I just finished my full year at the high school. All the students were happy with the classes. Nobody in admin said thank you. I was not surprised. I didn't expect any thanks, so I wasn't disappointed.

Ditto. After the next semester is over I will leave my University, and I rather doubt I'll get much from the Admin. God knows they ignored me throughout the two years, so I'd probably die of shock if i got some serious acknowledgment. [saying that they do give a gift to all teachers at the end of each semester of something useless like Shampoo, or fresh fruit. I've been invited each time. Cute]

Personally, I think the OPs attitude is thinking along the lines of what ESL was like 10 or 15 years ago. That "natives" were so grateful for english teachers that they bent over backwards to make them welcome. Those days are long gone. Times have changed along with the hordes of foreigners who come over doing the bare minimum or frankly, doing a terrible job with a horrible attitude. The teacher before me barely taught in class except to show movies all the time, and refused outright to spend any time with students outside of class time. No surprise they're suspicious of foreign teachers..

Excuse me but I thought this was an ESL forum? Correct me if I am wrong.
I was under the impression that the majority of people who post here are English teachers, that's why I look to see if there is anything of interest to read.

So you were teaching what? Were you teaching? If not, why complain here?

Now, you seem to have an issue that would be more suitably attended to by your trade union perhaps, or your counsellor.

'They didn't thank me'. Good lord, give me a break. You expected what? 21 gun salute, sacrifice of every goat in the village, a contingent of vestal virgins???

I can see the point Kungfuman is making and I have found in dealing with the Chinese while looking for a position. I have not yet taught in China and may not seeing how devious and the lies put forth in negotiating contracts. But I have dealt with South Koreans in the military and Chinese while working for an insurance company, and have found some Asian cultures have no morals and will lie without evening thinking about how fruitless it is to lie on the subject matter at hand.

I have found one person in China so far out of over 20 contracts and contacts that has put forward in the contract what was said in the discussions and email offers. That is 1 out of 20, for me at least, with the other 19 plus being full of b.s. and can't tell the truth for their life.

In fact, when I asked to speak with a teacher at one of the schools, it turns out this person never taught anything, didn't have any teaching qualifications, took a low end TESOL course, and is considered by the school an "experienced" teacher. This person was a manager at a Starbucks in the U.S., really good teaching qualifications. So kungfuman saying that some go to China because they can't make it in the States probably has some merit and so far for me these agents and schools will lie whenever they can.

And this point has been highlighted by others here. The vast majority of teachers on this forum are English teachers. Teaching qualifications are indeed helpful, however, I started teaching without any. I had experience in Corporate training but nothing directly ESL related. (my Tefl is rubbish)

The point is though that I make my classes interesting and a bit of challenge for my students. And they rise to the challenge. Repeatedly. I don't consider myself to be a great teacher. Ive seen great teachers (often without any qualifications) and I certainly don't have that gift. However I am capable of motivating students. Thats something I learned as a manager, and researched extensively on the internet as to how to do it.

So, rather than bitching about your students, perhaps you should take a long look at your teaching style. I use student review groups for that very purpose since I'm still learning what keeps students motivated, happy, and learning effectively.

IF you're teaching a non-english subject I suspect you have a harder time keeping them interested, but from the language of your posts you hold students in contempt, and they're likely to pick that up from you.
