| This is something from the cultural revolution when it was considered bourgeoise to thank someone. People didn't serve people but served the state. If you talk to Chlinese from Taiwan , Hong Kong and Singapore they too will tell you that it is strange that they should laugh at you for saying thank you or xie xie to them for a service. This is changing with younger people and people who are getting out of China. Chinese have other ways of saying thank you(putting two fingers on the table when someone gives you water or brings you something in a restaurant) I think maybe we say thank you too much. "Please pass the salt!Thank you!" It seem like when I ate with my parents most of the conversation we had was saying please and thank you. |

The new school I am working at - a BC / GAC school asked me to do some new student enrollment exams for the OTHER program. I could have said NO! As this wasnt part of my duties or my program.
BUT I said sure and did them.
When I got to the interview room the director of that program came over and thanked me very much for helping her. After the last student left she came over and thanked me again.
All I could say is that if I had a tail it would have been wagging.
Sometimes a thank you goes a long way |

You are entitled to that belief. I imagine, that just maybe, there are a handful of people in the world who consider pay, hours and holidays to by an indicator of you bosses gratitude or lack thereof. Thus when you say it is irrelevant, perhaps not to all...

| I wish my FAO never thanked me or complimented me. It is so insincere that it ruins my mood. |

I know what you mean. It's sort of like when I thank my FAO for doing things she should have done three months ago. |

I know how you feel re the FAO doing something that should have been done weeks earlier... but I send out those thank you emails anyway, because when you get right down to it, I AM happy and grateful to have my new RP or what ever it might be. Guess I'm just hoping the positive reinforcement will have a cumulative effect.

Presumably, it was the head of the FAO himself, who told you this! |
