I worked for Majan Institute in Sur, Oman this summer and I can tell you, honestly, that this is a place you DO NOT want to become involved with!
First of all the director there, who used to be the director for the ELS CENTRE in Sur, is a liar and a drunk! She was fired from ELS for drinking on the job, and while she won the case against her because of the lack of "clear cut evidence" against her, I have known her for over 1 year and I can assure you that ELS was NOT wrong in their claims against her. ELS was just unable to prove their claims sufficently to the court.
Secondly, I was never given a contract by the director...she insisted that my contract was through the Ministry of ManPower...which I did not think was correct. So, I directly asked the MofMP myself, giving them all of the details concerning my employment, and was told that they DO NOT give contracts to people like me. Therefore, I worked all summer without a contract and now, Majan Institute is REFUSING TO PAY ME THE MONEY THAT IS OWED TO ME! And as far a I know, no other teacher who worked there, putting in their time and effort, were paid either!
My advice to anyone who wishes to work in Oman is to AVOID "private organizations" like Majan Institute and try to get a contract directly through government ministries. While working for a government ministry is certainly challenging and may be a huge pain in the neck, it is the only way that one can safe-guard themselves against scammers, drunks, liars, and cheats like Majan Institute.

I am sorry for your experience - it sounds terrible and that lady is quite famous for her disease / affliction, whatever you can call it.
Just to clarify though, all employment contracts are meant to be registered with the Ministry, whether you work directly for them or not. If you work at a college or Uni, then you would be registered / approved by the Min of Higher Ed. For institutes and all other employment, you would be registered / approved under the Ministry of Manpower.
I am not sure what she or the Min told you - perhaps the Ministry didn't grant your visa approval - did you have to do a "visa run" every month? If not and you had no visa at all, then there would be big penalties. Did you ever get a resident card?

I've heard nothing but horrible things about Majan in Sur - specifically the lady you're talking about and issues almost exactly the same as yours. I'm really sorry to hear all of this. |

Ah, I've heard many stories about that lady. Just to clarify though, hasn't ELS, Sur been closed down for awhile now? |
