Why would you waste so much money on an ex-pat apartment? What's so special?

I have all the same amenities like gas, electricity, 24hr hot water, internet, heating, air conditioning, security, satellite TV............

Plenty of other really good places at much less than that

Duhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh - with the a right kind of job u don't do the paying, that's done for you - but keep on trying and one day you could find a job that really pays a decent wage Rolling Eyes

Duhhhhhhhh - but your not Chinese - your ex-pat. With all the downsides to living out here - only a few hardly ex-pat souls would waste away years at a lousy $3000/month.
$3000/month hardly pays of the monthly rent for ex-pat apartments in Shanghai nor Beijing

Actually living in Beijing in a new apartment for 2500rmb per month and with the low cost of commuting, insurance and long periods of vacation, someone can save quite a lot and it isn't how much you earn (as Ben Franklin alluded to) but what you can save.

Chinadad, if you take care of yourself, the opportunity to save and make more money becomes easier and the ability to control your own living conditions is "priceless".

Exactly, my apartment all utilities are controlled by the occupant and the cost is quite reasonable, I would even say much cheaper than my counterparts back home.

These folks thought they wanted an expat standard which in some circles would be called "service" apartments.

It's something that CEOs of multinationals provide to the VPs in charge of procurement and manufacturing stationed in China on 300,000+USD a year contracts with 24/7 drivers and company Mercades.

And which some TESOL whiners think should be provided to them as well by their local chinese employers.

TEFL teachers in China don't want $300,000 salaries and super luxuries flats; they want fair and reasonable salary and conditions that keep pace with the changing demands on teachers as well as the new wealthier China that is today. They deserve better and they also deserve far better rights in employment. FT's in mainland China are still not uncommonly "bonded" by a breach penalty of $2,000 US if they wish to get out of a one year contract and that is totally ridiculous and outrageous by modern employment standards.

Changing the above could possibly might salve the wound of perpetual warnings oozing specifically and egregiously from the middle kingdom and, who knows, maybe make it a good place for teachers to work and feel appreciated and justly treated again.

Bloom.

Got it. I'm in an exdarryl apartment.

And that's not an unrealistic expectation. I think I'd like not only to be treated like a professional, but I'd also like to work with CTs who have professional attitudes. I'd also like the same leeway in my contract that the CTs seem to have in theirs.
