I don't believe the myth that blonde hair and blue eyes get you better jobs over people with real experience and qualifications though.

Make two new e-mail accounts.

Put out a short resume with little in the way of qualifications and attach a photo of a good-looking blonde (male or female) with sharp blue eyes.

Then put out a photo of an ugly guy (or female) with loads of experience and/or qualifications.

THEN you will believe it.

I challenge any non-believers to try this little test and see for yourself the sheer shallowness China is.

Will the rating be based on quantity or quality.

A baseless resume with no quals listed will only pick up replies from bottom feeding institutions.

A resume with good quals will pick up replies from decent employers.

One reply in the latter equals hundreds in the former.

Appearance does matter unfortunately.

A friend of mine just landed a job talking at a TEFL conference. No TEFL certificate, no teaching qualifications not a native speaker - but he does have blonde hair and white skin.

Yes, appearance does matter when getting an interview, a job, or a promotion (and this is hardly exclusive to China). But in the context of ESL in China, how you look appears, to me at least, far less important here than it is in a few other countries in this region. Look around, there are many more older, fatter, and uglier foreign English teachers in China than you will ever see in Korea or Thailand (where in addition to "lookism" there's a lot more ageism). For all the shallowness in China many of the teachers working here right now wouldn't get a second look in other countries.

there's a greater demand for teachers here; so the fat ugly blokes get a look in, as do the non-native speakers

supply and demand

Who wants to work for somebody that thinks like that anyway. I'm a chubby lesbian, deathly allergic to high heels and skirts, almost fully gray head of hair. I got lots of no replys and rejections when I started applying for overseas jobs. But had my choice of offers at the end of the day because I just kept applying. Get the law of large numbers on your side. Keep putting youself out there. Sane people know quality when they see it and that's who you want to work for. That's what I think anyway. Good luck old dirty raver ; ) You're cute, just get more qualifications if you aren't getting the offers you want.

If you're working in China, there's a good chance you're working for somebody who thinks like that already, whatever they say to your face

I get the " look" ever min of everyday once I step outside my home...

I'm by all means not fat or ugly, I get told I'm handsome. I would have to agree with the comment above that China has lots of unattractive FTs.

In fact, I'm yet to spot an attractive foreign girl in north China. I believe the only ones that where attractive were in Hong Kong.

I met a very attractive young American woman in China. She spent most of our conversation complaining about the food, her students, the weather, and the Chinese people in general. She gave me her number.

I threw it away.

Well done sir!

I have to ask though, when you walk by a foreigner in your city, or perhaps other cities you frequented, do you give the good old "acknowledgment" nod?

When I was in Korea, it was the the norm to walk by and give the old nod. However with that being said, here in China its a different story, it seems like no one bothers.

Maybe it is the look I don't know. But I have done interviews and had offers even though I am Muslim and upfront about it. Though I am 6'5", blonde, and athletic, with hazel eyes. I have to say it did make me wonder why a photo was always requested and when I sent one they immediately reply.

I have to say the OP looks Mediterranean to me, I don't care one bit because people are people, and maybe that is how their bias is formed.

A lot of the foreign teachers do have a common "look"

wasted from the night before
possibly slept under a hedge
2-3 days stubble
clothes that look like they came from a charity shop
a mixture of teeth missing/gold fillings
inappropriate tattoos
