So, this is my first contract to be completed in China and i'm busy making sure that i do everything i need to do. And as i understand it, if there is one thing that i should not leave without it is:
1) The release letter/letter of completion
2) Reference letter ( if i should choose to work in China again)
Am I missing anything ? |

besides originality you do not need anything if your leaving china.
even if you came back to china your old release letter is not required because you will have to get a new z-visa, something that does not revolve around the release of an old position. |

Keep your fec book if you can and make sure to get the personalized reference letter - best way is you write it and get them to sign and stamp it on their letterhead - use red ink on the chop. |

This is not true, as I needed my original release letter from my last legal employer in China to get a new Z visa before coming back to China. |

| Your employer gets to keep the FEC book. You aren't supposed to take it. |

This sounds important. Perhaps some provinces are a stickler for this. I will ask today for this. Does anyone know the Chinese name for the release letter? I am assuming that they will feign ignorance if it means a little extra work. |

Every Chinese employer who employs foreigners will know about the release letter. I did not need one when I came back for my second z-visa but I suppose this could just be another region variation. If you have any intention of coming back you should certainly get one before you leave just to be safe. |

| The first white buffalo calf was recently born on a reserve in the US. According to native lore the fourth born white calf will truly spell the "end of times." |

Haha, i was just employing a little hyperbole to garner some attention. Though, I would be more concerned with the solid science behind Nibiru, than some "native lore". |

Okay, so they said that they will provide me with a "recommendation letter". Is this the same thing ? They also mentioned "but the proof of foreign expert certificate must be wait till the certificate be cancelled by the official, general for three or five days."
Is this standard procedure? This has nothing to do with the resident permit ?
Before you ask - yes i will ask my employer, but my employer is very difficult to speak with as their answers leave me more confused or they simply don't answer. Someone who has finished their contract, i assume will be able to decipher her response, i hope. |

Recommendation letters and release letters are terms used interchangeably but I cannot guarantee your employers intention so here is the link for the form you need. Print it out, get it filled out in Chinese and signed and stamped. Stamped twice if your school has 2 chops.

The FEC technically is ID for the FT during employment you have a right to see it any time. It also says in the back you can use it as ID, but must return it at the end of contract (the implication is that it's yours while the contract is valid). Your employer should be willing to scan this document at anytime, if anything that should with hold the release letter until near the end of contract.
Review this thread for more information.

They are separate but both are important.
They Chinese OFTEN mix up the names they refer to these documents by. I just suffered MASS CONFUSION at my new school when I was asked to bring the reference letter in again as they lost it.
What I called the RELEASE LETTER THEY called reference letter.
Make sure you are both on the same wavelength OTHERWISE when it comes down to the wire you may be stuck.
Release letter: The OFFICIAL document that says you completed the contract, plus has some personal data about you like salary and age and nationality. Also has a box where they can put in a comment. This is on a standardized official government form and is signed and chopped by the last employer. They usually require the real thing, not a copy. If you are smart you will make a few color copies just in case and scan it and save it.
Reference letter: A letter from the employer on their letterhead saying you are the greatest thing since sliced bread and they are sorry to see you go. (if they like you.) If they don't like you it simply says you worked here from this date to that date and you fulfilled your duties.
Scan and make color copies of these. |

Super grateful for the information on this thread. I was just going to start looking for specifics, and there they are.
And just to confirm, the employer keeps the FEC, yes? We don't need it when changing jobs?
