So I read all the negative press on Ed Ex and thought they can't be that bad.
I did a skype interview and all seemed well. They offered me a contract and eventually got around to the visa.
"you will come on a visit visa" they said.
"will I be able to sponsor my wife with that?"
"Oh, you have a wife!"
"er, I told you that in the interview"
"You can fly back to your home and get an iqama later"
"ok , thats going to cost a lot as well as be time consuming,so can you get me an iqama now?"
"Our visa guy says we have no iqamas left for New Zealand"
"I don't come from New Zealand"
......silence.........
"So if you apparently can't get me an iqama now (for a country that I'm not even a citizen of), whats to say at a later date that you will be able to get me an iqama?"
......silence......
" So what you are effectively telling me is that my wife will not be able to come to Saudi now or later?"
.....silence.....
Thank you Ed Ex for saving me the trouble of working for you! |

Good call. The whole 'fly back later' means after your contract is up (a year) they might give you the option to go get an iqama and your wife.
Visit visas aren't for families. |

I am curious about with whom you had the pleasure of conversing. Was it the Gorilla, or Dr. Harvey Wallbanger?

What a shame that such slave companies, who lie and cheat people, are still allowed to run their business for years. They are meant to be professionals, hiring professionals to work as language instructors for tertiary institutions.
What a shame! |

You are right, it is a shame.
But unfortunately all too common, especially in Saudi by the sounds of it.
It would be great for people to write about their positive employment experiences. |

They stay in existence because as they get dropped from one university, they move on to other suckers for new contracts. Eventually, the word will spread among the Saudi universities to stay away from them. |

And for job-seekers to avoid them as well! |

Are you implying that Saudi unis are any better than the contractors/recruiters? They are all made of the same material, as far as I am concerned. |

That depends on the university. I've been impressed by some of the assistant deans and newer generation coming from doing their degrees abroad. Reliance on the old guard and expats from other Arab countries and the West to do their recruiting seems to be a problem. |

An unpleasant surprise was awaiting in my email in-box this morning: an "employment" contract and big congratulations from Education Experts! Who'da thunk it! I mean, it came from their UK office, and I have no clue how they got my resume, unless it was passed along by who/whatever. Hmm... the monthly salary is 2700 SAR (about $720 US) less than what I currently earn, and it looks like I'd get a quickie biz visit visa because they want me to be in country by the end of August. I'd love to join EdEx's unhappy teaching community, but there's just one big hitch: I'm already employed at a Saudi uni as a direct hire with an iqama! Duh. I ain't stoopid! Anyway, I haven't yet responded... Bwuhahaha! |

If it is for the same institution, perhaps you could sign and gather both salaries at the same time. Of course, you would need a second passport. Why is it that I expect that they are clueless enough to fall for it?

Today I learned that EdEx is ripping off it's teachers whose contracts dictate they are here during summer. For days they don't have teaching assignments they are not paid. I always thought that your contract starts when you land and you get paid whether you're working or not. |

If you are waiting for work on campus then yes they should be paying you. If you're waiting at home, no they don't have to pay you. Of course, there are some 'grey areas' that are decided by your employer...probably they make it up as they go
Why do people continue working with this company...seems crazy that people would put up with such crap!!! Just say no to EdEx! |

Really cmp45? I have never heard of such a thing. Any contract that I had started on the day I arrived in country, and I was to be paid my monthly salary - each and every month - until such time as the contract ends and I leave the employer forever. Could be one year... could be ten...
I have never heard of a contract where they drag you into a country and then only pay you if they manage to round up some contact hours for you. Why would anyone take a job like that?
