In the continuing search for the cheapest CELTA in creation (What can I say - Scottish roots) I stumbled on this:

$1300 USD, at the British Council (Rule Britannia and God Save the Queen - Sex Pistols Version, please) in sunny Bogota, Colombia! Unfortunately all the cheap flights go via the Evil Empire, and the British Council are terribly pukka and I can't bear cucumber sandwiches. I have to draw the line somewhere. On the other hand, $1000 USD can buy a lot of principles. I have some spares that have never been used!

I found a Trinity course in Bali for $1500 USD, which is par for the course, but the promise of accommodation for $50 USD a month made the spiders in my wallet glow with warm fuzzies at the prospect of balmy tropical afternoons of undisturbed slumber. I can also get flights to Bali for less than one to visit my family in an adjacent state, so it's all good - or is it? It the Trinity TESOL really the duck's nuts? Is it as widely recognised as the CELTA, or is it for those insufferable people for whom everything they own carries some unpronouncable brand that no one's ever heard of, and they bore everyone into a coma by endlessly prattling on about how much better it is than the garden variety rubbish that you've actually heard of, when all you really want the muppet to do is notice that your beer is empty and it's his shout?

As far as I'm concerned, they're absolutely equivalent, yes. The British Council says so too I think..
Well I dunno but here in Russia all the big schools will take either.

I believe there is a CELTA in Halifax. Canada, at least there used to be. It's supposed to be quite cheap there.

Here it is, it's called ILI and it's $2300 Cdn, not as cheap as I thought it was.

I paid $2500 Cdn years ago in Richmond, B.C. I thought it was worth the money even though it is a large chunk of change.

While they are equivalent for employers including the British Council (I have one and they accepted it), you might want to consider your long term ELT goals, if any. In September I will do a CELTYL (cert for teaching Young Learners) but will not be issued a certificate because the CELTYL only endorses a currently held CELTA.

I am doing it for the PD opportunity as I will never face a situation where an employer refuses me employment because I cannot actually produce a CELTYL certificate as opposed to a piece of paper that says I've done the course. You, however, may want to try and get a CELTYL on the back of a certificate in teaching adults and, if so, you will want the CELTA.

FWIW, if you do the CELTA with the British Council you will definitely get what you pay for and the chance to mix with some very qualified and experienced teachers who, if they have time, may toss you a few scraps

I've been reading up on the Trinity TESOL, and it seems so much like the CELTA that it's like Coke and Pepsi. What bothers me about it is that they also do qualifications in music and dance, which seems rather odd to me, although I have noticed that a lot of TEFLers have indicated that singing and dancing is highly valued by employers

Guess I'll go with brand recognition.
