There's an Argentine restaurant in Insurgentes giving freebies for every (!) Argentine or Mexican gold medal. Great business sense.
Good thing it's not a British restaurant; they'd be bankrupt!
It'd be OK if it were Canadian, though... |

I suppose giving British food away for free is a way to get people to eat it. |

The European teams have been disappointing, but I think the Olympic football tournament is taken much more seriously in Central/South America and other confederations. The tournament always takes place the same year as the European Championships, so the Olympic tournament almost comes as an afterthought. There's also the World Cup and Champions League, both of which are considered more important by most fans in Europe I would say. I think Spain were the last European team to win the Olympics in 92.
Should be a good final, and I think Mexico have a sneaky chance, Brazil's defence has been pretty shocking at times, would be good to see Mexico get a gold medal.
Yes, with all that gold, the UK will be able to replenish its gold reserves which were sold off a few years back! |

Yeah, I think Mexico has a chance to win. But, I heard last night that Giovanny Dos Santos has a sprained ankle and might now play, which could make a difference. Or not, he is hot and cold. |

Bravo Mexico! What a start, and what a nervous finish! I was worried that they had started celebrating too early. A fully deserved victory and well executed game plan. It'll be some fiesta today me thinks... |

Yes, indeed! I'm off in a few minutes to see what's happening at El Angel in Mexico City. |

The gold is sweet! Mexico has had a lot of success the last two years with some real talent finally.
Looked like a large crowd at the angel... |

There is a big crowd there, jubilant but not rowdy. This may be because the local convenience stores have signs up saying there will be no alcoholic beverages for sale today. As I was strolling along Reforma, a young man stopped me and asked if I wanted him to decorate my face with red, white and green chalk. I declined but felt pleased that he saw me as just another happy Mexican out celebrating. |

... don't forget Mara del Rosario Espinosa. A bronze in the Tae Kwon Do, and that after being felled, boxing-style, in the semis. |
