I think we're confused on a point here...did you buy it brand new or is it used? If new, then there's something wrong, and it may be that you need to register the number with Telcel with your passport. Takes a few minutes but you have to go to a Telcel service center (there's one at 222 Reforma and another al centro, among others).
If it's used, then the credit may have expired as BBB noted. |

| I didn't know there was such thing as a used sim. I paid $150. Does that sound like a new or used price? |

| On Revolucion across from a market at an authorized Telcel reseller. I wanted to go to a real Telcel office but the person helping me was in a hurry. Now I'm a little pissed that I got ripped off. Or did I? If I spoke Spanish is would go back there. I have the sim packaging still. |

From your initial post, I got the impression you bought it from a friend...if you pulled it out from the package then it is new.
I think it's likely the registration issue...go to the Telcel service center and bring someone who speaks Spanish. Probably a very simple fix. |

If you bought just a SIM, without buying a phone, then, yes, it is not only used, but most likely registered to someone else. In Mexico, by law, all cell phone numbers must be registered to the owner. So if you did not have to show an ID or fill out any papers, then the number is not even registered to you. I would go back and talk to the person who sold it to you. But you are probably better off just buying the cheapest phone you can find, and taking out the SIM, that was you know you are starting fresh, and that the number is registered to you and not someone else. |

| Unfortunately I do not speak English. If anyone is willing to go with me, I'll buy them a beer or some tacos. One thing I've noticed about Mexico is while they are warm people, no one wants to go out of their way to help you. Even the expats who speak Spanish are hesitant. I don't get it. |
