Is Abu Dhabi that much better a place to live than KSA?

I have offers from both countries.

I know nothing.

I know you can get a beer in Abu Dhabi.

Welcome back, JerkyBoy.

Obviously, Abu Dhabi makes for an easier, freer (and more expensive) lifestyle than ultra-conservative Saudi Arabia. But in addition to your goals and lifestyle (e.g., saving money vs. spending frivolously for a good time), there are other major factors you should consider, such as which employer comes out on top in terms of reputation/stability, and which job provides the best level of salary and benefits.

Abu Dhabi or Saudi? I would say that a frugal person can save more money in Abu Dhabi, although many will disagree. Abu Dhabi has free beaches and a wonderful cornich for walking or running and you can go camping or have a picnic in the desert. There are lots of free lectures and movies in Abu Dhabi, too.

Saudi? It's just not the same, and nearly impossible to do these activities in mixed company or for a woman to do these activities at all. You'll spend more money trying to escape from Saudi whenever you can.

Could a person live comfortably in the UAE for 10 years or more? Easily. On the other hand, I was amazed that I got through one year in Saudi. But hey, everybody has their own journey in either place, so who is to say?

1. That was definitely true in my case. I saved a large chunk of my salary every month, and then frittered it away on fleeting pleasures every time I left Saudi and entered the real world!

2. Agreed. Savings in a much more bearable ME environment, such as the UAE or Qatar, may not pile up quite as fast, especially if you treat yourself to fine food and drink a lot, but you'll be able to save for much longer, as you will actually be able to settle down for a good few years there, rather than gritting it out for a year in Saudi, while blowing savings on every holiday that comes along!
