I plan on teaching in HCMC FULL-TIME! There's money to be made there from what Prof. Gringo and his friend keep telling me. What's equal to 18 to 20 bucks an hour sounds great to me.

Isn't that relatively low for HCMC and Hanoi? I get paid a bit more than that, and I live in one of Vietnam's smaller cities.

A salary that is equal to 18-20 bucks an hour sounds GREAT to me. Remember, I have been in the U.S. for the past year where if you're unemployed for any amount of time means you do not get a job.

So Vietnam sounds GREAT to me!

I'd like to know if you're actually on a salary which is equivalent to 18-20 per hour, or if your hourly rate is between those figures but you're actually getting paid for the hours you do. On 18-20 I'd be wanting at least 80+ hours a month and a fat juicy bonus at the end of the contract.

Considering you have a Masters, shouldn't you be aiming higher than that? I certainly would be. The pay must be very poor in Mexico is all I can say.

According to Prof. Gringo that is hourly. He will be starting to work in September so August is like a vacation over there for him. Nice. His friend who has been teaching there for a while told him that he could get around 20 to 30 hours a week if he wants. So 30 hours a week X 18 or 20 sounds good to me.

I'm not sure about a bonus at the end of the contract since I will be going without a work visa or a job. I will start the process once I get over there. But I will for sure mention the bonus to whatever school I will be talking with.

Probably, but I have been unemployed and living in the U.S. for the past year so I figure 18 to 20 per hour is good to start. I figure I'll be able to make more in Vietnam after a year or two. Especially since my Masters specialization is in English Language Learners (ELL).

I recently started work on my Doctor of Education (Ed.D). I'm hoping it will help me advance at a university or some other type of company. Vietnam sounds like the promised land.

Sorry EFLed, this is not intended as a slight against you, but you sound way too excited about what could easily become a disaster. This ProfGringo guy JUST got to Saigon last week, and you are taking what he tells you as gospel? And he hasn't found work. Yes, he THINKS he has work next month. Let's see. His mysterious friend, someone he met there, the guy who has all the inside info... surely you've met con artists in your day? Surely you realize that the loudest-mouth ESL teachers are the ones who are desperate for recognition, usually from new arrivals, because their peers have rejected them? Has ProfGringo ever met this long-term ex-pat when said ex-pat was sober?

Take a deep breath, brother. It ain't the paradise you think. I love it here, and I get annoyed and frustrated every day, and I'd never encourage another to come here based on my feelings and experiences. Hopefully it will all fall into place, but please lose the pie-in-the-sky stuff. The pie is about to hit ProfGringo in the face, and you could be next.
