One of the last "action" movies I attended in America was "Mission Impossible II". It was a bit disturbing watching people around me acting thoroughly mesmerized by the twenty-minute gun battle or laughing at the gratuitous violence.
One of the movie houses in my home town has a dollar movie where second-run movies play. This attracts families of rug rats who walk and run up and down the aisles throughout the movie.
And cell phones?
The Chinese haven't cornered the market on inconsiderate behavior.
re: laughing during violent scenes: some people release anxiety through laughter. It was very weird the first time I noticed such behavior. A woman walked through a plate-glass door, cut herself quite severely, and laughed throughout the entire event while the medics bandaged her up and took her away in an ambulance. I've witnessed car collisions and near collisions and seen one of the drivers laugh his butt off. One's first impression is that the laughing guy is a j@ckass, but the chances are that he's doing it as an anxious reaction to the event.
Please don't think that I am challenging you. I merely stated that I've seen the same thing in the U.S.. |

| Neither. You assume that the observed behavior was that of Chinese Americans. |

| The last time I went to a cinema in China was in Shanghai in 1989. At that time, admission was dirt cheap and families would bring their lunch, dinner, etc with them and hang out all day in the air conditioning. Many of them seemed to have little interest in the films. The last film I saw was a Chinese one called "Porn Ghost in the Dark". It was about the gloriious, heroic efforts of the Shanghai Police and the communist party in wiping out pornography in Shanghai. It was so stupid and over the top that I couldn't help but laughing, though it wasn't intended to be funny. But it was a noisy, smoky, and filthy place and I swore I would never attend a cinema again in China. And this was all before the age of cell phones. Since that time, with cheap DVDs and the availablility of cheap or free downloadable films, why would anyone want to go to a cinema in China? |

IMAX. Big Screen. Superb quality and comfortable chairs. And just to get out of the house.

I guess you never went to Times Square in the late 70's to check out a kung fu or porn flick. |

I have to say, I am really really pleased I saw The Avengers at the cinema. OK, it is the ONLY movie I have seen at a cinema in China, but it was clean, there wasnt excessive noise, no-one was smoking (I think people exaggerate the amount of smoking in China) and it was cheap. Plus I went with a nice female friend and I enjoyed her enjoying the movie.
I liked the film so much I bought a pirate DVD of it a few weeks later. It cost 15 RMB and didnt work. I took it back to the store and he changed it for another one which did work, but was clearly recorded in a cinema on a hand-held camera, and the sound synch was out.
The cinema was a bargain at 35 RMB really. And it was 3D.
(Cinema was in Guilin BTW - I cant comment on ALL cinema's of course!) |

I hate smoking as much as anyone but not a total nazi about it like some back home. My daily life revolves around the classroom, my apartment, visits to colleagues, bbq outside the main gate. . . pretty much a smoke free environment for the most part. Obviously when I travel or head downtown it's a different story. One of my favourite smoking stories was traveling on a small inter city bus going from Lanzhou to Xiahe, you can't get much more Chinese than those places. The bus was almost full, and of course a few Chinese guys were smoking away . . . . there were a couple of foreign female backpackers up front and one of them tried to get the guys to stop smoking, to no avail. Instead of opening the window and using that as a source of fresh air she stood up and started flapping her arms like she was a bird well we all had a good laugh, and they kept on puffing away |

My best 'cinema' experiences were in Africa though. I was working in a small town in Kenya and the 'cinema' was a big local draw. They would write the movie title on a blackboard outside and we'd file into this room at night and sit on wooden benches, to watch a big old TV and VCR which was wired into car stereo speakers. I watched The Terminator and T2 on consecutive nights and the locals would whoop and cheer each time something notable happened on screen. |

Hilarious. As soon as I read this, I had a good laugh myself.
The Bird Woman! Haha!

I've never seen people smoking on a bus for example. Never seen people smoking where they want at school either. There has always been nominated areas that people use.
Its a long time since I rode taxi's but I dont remember people smoking in them.
And ditto for elevators. Again, I dont ride many but I dont recall people smoking in them.
Didnt see anyone smoking when I had my health check, or when I went to the hospital for my GF to go to the dental department.
Sure, smoking is a lot more common in China than it is in the west, but its never anywhere near as bad as discussed on forums IMO. Thats based just on my experience of course. I have caught all kinds of buses in China from the 10 hour overnight ones, to the dusty local kind out in the sticks...and never seen a lit cigarette on one. |

I know this thread is not about smoking, per se, but . . . yeah, usually people around here flick out their cig. butts just before getting on the bus . . . then exhaling the smoke on the bus! And of course, their clothes and breath reek of it.
My school only allows smoking outside the school gates, but I have smelled it a couple of times in the mens room.
Taxis? OMG, every other taxi driver has one lit up when I hail them. I then "un-hail" them. And this is regardless of the fact that no smoking signs have now been affixed inside Suzhou taxis!
I have an elevator in my building. I can't tell you how many times I have to tell those wanting to board at the same time as me to throw out their cigarette first. They reluctantly do so, but of course they drag their cigarette smelling clothes and body in so it's just about as disgusting.
BTW: Went to see Prometheus the other day and there were all of 6 people in the theater! It was on a Wednesday night and this movie didn't make a big splash this summer in the US. Don't know why as I thought it was WONDERFUL. AND, I didn't even mind the stupid 3D. If it's still playing where you are, I recommend it (esp. if you were/are a big fan of the Alien movies). |
