I pray to the mods that this thread sees favor. I am humbly asking for some leeway here as this issue should be discussed in some polite courteous manner.

The issue behind this background check is concerning some teachers that have had criminal records and have slipped through the cracks and have secured employment at KSU.

How would you feel to be working with an ex con who went to a different state to get a clean police record check? How would you feel if your colleague was convicted of doing things to minors? I think this is a good idea for KSU to provide a safe environment for its students and staff.

What do you think?

It is quite an important topic, of course. Hopefully it will be discussed without things getting personal. Cool That is what happened to the other thread.

This issue certainly becomes important when it is an employer who places teachers in shared housing. I worked with employers that vetted employees thoroughly, so I didn't encounter any teachers who were scary, but I have heard tales.

Hmmm....

But what will they do with the guy who was president of an American university, and got busted driving while intoxicated in two states in one incident? (He drove across the bridge between two U.S. states with sparks flying from his rim because he was missing a tire, then wouldn't pull over when the cops put their sirens on, and finally got arrested in his driveway at home.)

How would you feel if you had to get a criminal background check, or were denied for some youthful indiscretion, but Dr. Harvey Wallbanger (not his real name) doesn't need to undergo the same process?

Perhaps, the lesson is that this is a kingdom without a constitution, and there are different rules for different people, especially those whom the Saudis feel they can market and use to make money.

That same company would lose a large percent of their teachers if they ran background checks. Hence, the 3 month visa and cash payments!

I agree that there have been sketchy people working at schools in KSA, and I understand that KSU wants to make sure their employees aren't former criminals.

But honestly, what do credit checks and financial statements have to do with this? These companies should be contacting the police in every state to find out if someone has a criminal record, rather than going through personal contacts and confidential information.

I appreciate you all for keeping a professional conduct in this thread. Wink

In the UK this doesn't happen as there is one central agency - of course even unfounded allegations that never even got to court count against you in the UK so that's not the perfect model either. Tbh it would depend what the crime was before I worried. Persistent speeding would probably give them a competitive edge Very Happy

Every time I watch 'banged up abroad', and see so many English teachers (backpackers) being caught with drugs, I wonder how many of this type are currently teaching in Saudi.

Grendal:

How did you obtain this information about your colleague?

Quite simple actually. One year he's working with us, the next year he's not. I asked as to why and was told about teachers' reason for dismissal.

I know there is more I can reveil about it, but confidentiality will be breached if I divulge more.

Old Saudi hands can correct me, but I don't believe that this has anything to do with credit checks or financial statements. It is the applicant providing the appropriate forms from his country's legal system to prove that he has not been in jail or arrested.

You can hardly expect a foreign government to be contacting the thousands and thousands of police departments in the US.

If someone commited a youthful indiscretion and had sex with his girlfriend before she turned 18, served his sentence, and has lived a law-abiding life for a couple decades since, why on earth should he be prevented from teaching university-aged males?

Surely you are not saying this person should be prevented from working for the rest of his life.

That's what I think. Thanks for asking.

A propos the post of LINGUIST above those who are not cognoscenti of Tabloid TV might not know that "Banged Up Abroad is rebadged as Locked Up Abroad for broadcast outside the UK." (Quote from Wikipedia.

It is a TV documentary series showing the fate of foolish young men and women who think that travelling in excotic places is fun - especially if you stash a kilo or two of exotic substances in your backpack.

One of the blessings of KSA is that these vile creatures stay away. The visa system in KSA is GREAT.

In Contemporary Britenglish "banged up" is low register for "detained by the state". In Amenglish of course it means something different. I will not offend the delicacy of readers by explaining.

Actually in AmEng, "banged up" would mean injured as in a fight or accident. You are confusing it with "knocked up" which is the one meaning pregnant. I think most readers here are old enough to cope with the concept of pregnancy. Cool

I would feel like I was working for a bunch of cowards. By cowards, I mean those who know the truth or what is right and don't do it. How would you feel working for a company that hired a colleague who confided to other teachers that his MA was bogus, and the people who hired him in company were well aware of it?
