MANY different threads on here have been posted on the Work Permit issue over the past 12 months alone!
Best to browse through those.
Be advised, however, that there are several different opinions AND several different personal, 1st-hand experiences OBTAINING work permits.
Basically, what I am suggesting that you keep in mind is that, in Viet Nam, NOTHING is ever carved into stone, such as:
- THEE only way to get a Work Permit
- THEE ONLY people who CAN get a Work Permit
- THEE ONLY amount of money that you (or your employer - but THAT is yet another separate sub-argument) will pay for said work permit
...and sooooo many more!
These factors CHANGE AND FLUCTUATE by things like region, how close your relationship (or your employer's relationship) is to The Powers That Be, and other things as well.
Read through the past threads, then, make up your own mind!
Best of luck! |

In short, no one really knows. It's like a Zen Buddhist koan.
The more you try to find out, the less you know. Once your thinking mind surrenders, enlightenment is achieved. |

Yes. I organized my police check whilst I was still in Australia and notarized my degree in Vietnam. However, I know an American lady who had no end of trouble getting her degree notarized here. I can't remember the exact circumstances, but the process cost her several hundred dollars and she needed the State Department to give her a letter personally signed by none other than Hillary Clinton . |

I take the degree cert to a solicitor and get how many notarised copies? Do I need copies certified by my university or only notarised copies from a lawyer?
I am British. I just go to my local police station and tell them I need a police check for Vietnam? |

You will probably be OK to do it here through your consulate. Just send them an e-mail to confirm. Also I needed to get my TEFL certificate notorized which, as mine was a CELTA that I got here, I had to go to the British Consulate.

In Australia that's all I did. Just be sure to bring lots of ID, proof of address etc. |

You need a BA, teaching certification (TEFL, CELTA, DELTA qualify), criminal background check from your country, an employer who has proof that they couldn't find a Vietnamese citizen to do the job (an ad receipt for some period of time with a job description in some detail AFAIK) and is licenced to hire foreign labour. You need a medical check that is done here, includes a blood test, eye test and chest x-ray. The CRC, University and teaching certifications have to be apostilled or notarized if you are Canadian. Most everything has to be translated into Vietnamese.
You need the school or a lawyer to take the application with all the documentation to the office to get your work permit.
If you are just popping in you'll need to leave the country every three months and re-enter to get a new stamp in your passport. Your country may have a different time period. If you are caught teaching illegally the school and you are fined in the 1 to 2 thousand dollar range. The school is closed for a few months. You get a naughty note in your passport for all other countries to see and deported at your expense.
I have not yet heard of anyone getting caught but more and more schools are asking for a work permit citing inspections.
I have not heard of anyone being inspected or witnessing an inspection. |

I went to the local immigration department a few weeks back asking for a work permit and the process, they said, would take seven months - The implications of this are obvious.
A big school, or any organisation for that matter, with the right connections can do it in the blink of an eye.
I've also met a guy with a work permit with no formal quals.
I don't even ask why anymore, I just wonder when it is all going to self implode. |
