Are all contracts for the full academic year, or could I turn up in, for example, Ho Chi Minh and find teaching work at any time fairly easily? |

Some places hire year round; it depends on the teaching situation. It would help to know the specific countries you want to teach in; the teaching situation you're seeking (e.g., international schools, language institutes, government contracts, or higher ed); your nationality; and what your qualifications are. |

Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh or near the coast somewhere was what I have in mind, but really anywhere in South East Asia / China.
I'm English, have a BSc and an online TEFL. Looking at getting a masters this year as I believe that's necessary for University work wherever you go? I don't have a PGCE or 'proper' teaching qualifications, so international schools are out I think.
Regarding the teaching situations you mention - I would appreciate advice on what I'd be capable of getting given my qualifications. Would also like to know rough number of hours per week, and wage.
Thanks. |

From the ad:
"Potential candidate: age restriction? Nationality preference? Skin color preference? / Education level restriction?
Less than 30, Canada or USA, white skin, BA and 2years experience."
and for another position:
"Potential candidate: age restriction? Nationality preference? Skin color preference?
Age:25-55. Sex: Male. Nationality is UK. U.S.A Australia New Zealand etc native speaking countries. White foreign teacher is preferred." Geez. What century is this? |

19. Based on your experience with former foreign teacher in the past, what do you want us to train them or explain thoroughly to them about so that they wont be surprised when they arrive? Untidy dress and piercing |
Did they post a whole lot of (revealing) stuff by mistake? Looks that way to me.

It depends on the country of choice.
International schools usually start their academic year in Sept.
Mainstream schools vary by country: Korea-March, Japan - April, Thailand-May, China - Sept.
Language academies hire year round with slumps after the middle of the 2nd term of the academic year and a big bump just after the start of the mainstream academic year (when their enrollments begin).
Contracts are usually for a full calendar year (as compared to the academic year), especially in language mills.

Would I better trying to arrange something before I leave, or just turning up and scouting around? What wage could I expect roughly? |

Again, Asian examples...
China and Korea - arrange employment BEFORE you travel (significant visa issues).
Largely, the rest of Asia is a boots on the ground affair - find work AFTER you land.
The upside is that you can see what you are getting into before you jump out of the frying pan.
The downside is that you need significant start-up funds; airfare, tourist visa then taking a visa run to an adjacent country to get a work visa, living expenses while you look for work and for another month until you get paid.

Not everywhere's term year starts in September. South America it usually starts in February.
If the term has already started I'd expect most vacancies will be for either:
a. Schools where a teacher has left unexpectedly.
b. Schools that have a larger intake than expected and now need more teachers.
With both it is a good idea to be cautious, and think about why they are in that situation in the first place. |
