I have 2 senior classes in college. They took a test before the holiday, and I have given them their tests back. Class 1 had about 75% strong students who scored 80% or higher. None of them fit the failing category besides one student who went to America in the summer and didn't return until the end of September (he didn't even come to take the test). Class 2 had a 50/50 split. 50% scored 80% or higher, 30% were in the 70% range, and 4 students are in questionable status even though their attendance is good.

I gave both classes a project to start and Class 2 followed exactly what I said (the best student even asked me the same questions at the end of class even though she knew the answers), they worked together, and we completed the first stage of the project. Class 1 on the other hand has more people that scored higher. The ones in the 80% range bickered and complained about the project (the ones in the 90% range listened, nodded, and we moved on). We could only finish half of what Class 2 did even though they scored higher. When they took the test, Class 2 had discipline problems, but Class 1 said nothing and finished a lot earlier (they were in and out). So, they scored higher and finished earlier, but working in a group they couldn't accept it.

Both classes don't want to return to the book material and they all want to finish this project I have given them to do, so how do I get Class 1 to cooperate in order to finish the project? Since I meet with Class 2 and then Class 1, I am thinking of showing them what Class 2 did so they know what I am expecting. If they don't cooperate and work in groups then they lose points. Or is this a ridiculous idea and I should individualize it more?
