I am on a tourist visa. Can I get a prepaid cell phone? Any type of phone? I cannot even call my parents unless I do so from work.
And..
My employer is trying to get rid of me prior to my three month probationary period expiring. Any advice in dealing with this and interviewing by phone elsewhere.
I am 36 by the way. |

The answers to your questions are country specific. Without knowing what country you are in there is no way to answer your questions.

He is "ABROAD". Big place, full of people who don't speak English. Scary. |

From posting history, appears to be in Japan now, Korea previously.
Probably intended to post in Japan forum.
I admit to some degree of curiosity as to what Tom's age might have to do with anything....seems unrelated to either phone use or the process of losing/finding jobs...
On second thought, perhaps '36' isn't Tom's age, but some sort of code for some other attribute that's related to jobs/job hunts? |

Working while on a tourist visa... Not a good mix. |

Age included as a bit of self deprecation and/or comfort for another individual out there.
I am 36 and am in a situation like so. This is kind of not something I`m not terribly proud of. |

Logically, I guess most of them are hanging about in the Japan forum... |

Even the pre-pays require a 1 year commitment, or you have to pay extra to get out of it. So I don't think anywhere will let you have a phone on a tourist visa. Given the urgency of your situation the only option I can think of is to rent one.
Some companies have a postal option, where they send the phone to you and you post it back later. Or you can go to a counter at an airport. I don't vouch for any of these companies, but I believe they are some of the more well known ones. You should be able to find many more with a quick search. You'll have to do the maths yourself to decide whether you want higher rental with lower call costs of vice versa.

Tom,
This is the generic Newbie forum. There isn't one for Japan. Just post in the Japan forum itself.
You could also go to www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree and visit the discussion group for Japan in the North East Asia section. Travelers helping travelers. (I don't even own a cell phone, or I'd help.)

Far more details needed. See you in the Japan forum!
My first inclination is that of nomad soul's. Working on a tourist status is illegal (if you are getting paid). Eagerly awaiting those details! |
