I've also taught a TCFL class and they were pretty great. Just as good as my English students actually, which doesn't say much for my English students.

More and more Chinese universities are offering Chinese language courses to foreigners.....and believe it or not, there are a lot of foreigners coming here to study Chinese. Maybe not from our countries, but from African and Arab countries.

Since Chinese universities also are now offering Masters degree for international students, they basically do 2 years of Chinese classes prior to their MBA classes. That means they need qualified teachers to teach Chinese. I would imagine a person who specifically studies teaching Chinese as a foreign language would have a better idea on what to do than someone who just studied Chinese, then tries to teach it. Not always a guarantee but test this theory by asking your English students or some Chinese major students some Chinese grammar questions or even Chinese language questions. One of my favorite to ask is the difference between "mei" 没 and "bu" 不 No one could explain it well until I took Chinese classes.

Here's one way in which they differ: 不 is used to negate stative verbs, or verbs that show a state of being. 没 can be used to negate activity and achievement verbs.

95% of the class are female and I thought they were studying Chinese. They all told me they are specifically studying Chinese in order to teach it to foreigners. How much of a market are they going to get? Seems like a sham degree. They are taking this English newspaper reading class, but they all said they will stay in China.

I've taught a writing class to the same major in the past - Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. Why do you consider it a sham degree? Some of them will undoubtedly find work teaching Chinese to foreigners, others won't and will end up in a completely unrelated field. In these respects their degree is no more a sham than many of those being handed out in Canada or the US these days - Women's Studies? Religious Studies? Film? How employable are some of these people?

I have been trying to prepare them for going abroad, thinking they would need English. Time to rethink this and all the time I am putting in preparing

If they find work teaching Chinese to foreigners then the working language between teacher and student will probably be English, so they'll still need it. I doubt the demand to learn Chinese will even come close to the demand for English, but there are still loads of teachers teaching Chinese to foreigners in various places, including at Confucius Institutes found all over the world. One teacher from our school taught Chinese in Indonesia last year, and I think she's still there.

There are lots of Koreans studying Chinese, so that is a need in the future that students are preparing for.

I began classes last week at a Chinese language school for foreigners. All of the teachers have an MA in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.

I agree with this statement 100%. I thought this post was going to be about Chinese welders not wearing any eye protection or people riding three-wheeled cart bicycles with a twenty foot high pile of cr@p latched on to it.

Where's the insanity?

Cool

Warm regards,
