I have a Trinity College TEFL certificate and 10 years experience in teaching Business English in 3 different countries and for numerous companies such as Bank of China, Mercedes-Benz and Deutsche Bank. How much (roughly) could I expect to be making in Shanghai as a Business English teacher? I heard that 6000RMB is about right. Any other opinions?? |

After months of searching from outside Shanghai, I accepted a job teaching 16 periods a week at a public university in north-eastern Shanghai for RMB5000 a month, with a RMB2000 monthly accommodation allowance and a RMB200 a month utilities allowance. There are some additional benefits in the package too like paid summer and winter vacations and full refund of the actual cost of a round-trip airfare..
I have been teaching in universities in China for three years now, and also have 30 years experience in teaching and school leadership in Australia.
I was attracted by the lower teaching hours, and the ability to be able to live off-campus. The low hours mean that I can also try out some of the private schools as part-time workplaces.
I did not see too many jobs advertised online in the RMB6000 to RMB10000 a month range. Those jobs that were advertised were in private schools where you were often required to teach 24 or more periods a week, and you had to be on-site up to 40 periods a week doing office work, promotional work, or preparation. |

5000 is about the best you could hope for in a university. Freelancing and corporate work could earn you considerably more, but you need to build connections. 100 a teaching period plus accommodation is not a bad deal here: how much you make depends on how many hours you put in. Some places have lots of overtime available at higher rates. |

On the same note, how much should one be expecting teaching in a smaller city ie the Liaoning provinces?
What does this salary depend on? Years of experience? College graduated from in the states? What if one has minimal teaching experience but has strong training skills working at large multinational corporations?
Just wondering! Thanks. |

Hi Ranma!
Most people start around 4000~5000 RMB a month (someone correct me if I'm wrong). But a few places pay higher (6000~8000) but as always there are usually some sort of strings attached.
A few on this board earn over 12,000 RMB a month, but many of them work their tales' off doing privates.
(PS)
My e-mails not working, so after I typed everything out, it wouldn't send. So I'm going to send it later today after work. |

I came into my job after my TEFL course, and get 5300 a month (with no rent or bills to pay for, and we get free meals). This is in Wuhan.
I know a bloke who has been tefling for 5 years, all over the world (Turkey, Spain, Indonesia and now China) who now is getting nearly 20k sterling a year - 3000 yuan in his hand and 1000 sterling paid into his english bank account every month. That is in Wuhan, where if he wanted to spend the money he could live like a king (he's actually saving it). He said that his job is right at the top of the scale though, you won't find many like that.
I think 6000 sounds low for Shanghai, I would expect to get about 10,000 a month there as prices are on average twice those of, say, Wuhan. |

Where does this information come from? Give some examples. One jin of pork in Shanghai is around 5 Y. An average bus trip is 1Y. Rice is .8Y a jin. Are these double Wuhan prices?
I'm not really having a go at you, just this suburban myth that Shanghai is expensive! Rent yes [compared to most Chinese cities that is: not London, Tokyo, NY], but if you're on campus, that doesn't matter.

Kinda seems like the money made in China is a good living in China, but at 6000RMB a month, that's about a savings of $7,200 a year in the US.. What is one to do after teaching in foreign countries with that kind of salary to be brought back home?
Do you all plan on one day going home? |
