You do not know the expression "Fie on you, Sirrah" ? Have you never read Shakespeare ? Do you even know who Shakespeare was ?

The prosecution rests its case.

Doesn't it mean "Shame on your sir?" My point is that I'm not a sir... (though some might call me a bit of a madam.)

Go on, talk to me in Shakespeare.

Oops - that should read "shame on you sir" (not "your sir" - that wouldn't make sense...)

Although Latin and other languages may be interesting enough to study, and have grammar concepts in common with English, I'm sure one can learn all about the grammar of English without much if any reference to such languages. (I mean, how many of us positively lap up books on grammar that contain forays into Dyirbal, Zapotec, etc). And teacher, teach thyself! Not for me the whining almost of some of the teachers in the TES article. (So what if they didn't receive even the patchiest of basic instruction? Big deal, get over it already!). It's good however if it then gets at least a look-in~at during teacher training.

Dear fluffyhamster,

Not the grammar - the vocabulary.

Regards,
John

Dear fluffyhamster,

Studying Latin for years has certainly helped my vocabulary (not so much my grammar) since about 60% of the English language comes from Latin.

Regards,
John

Yes, it's a wonder English people can understand much English at all without an education in Latin (and let's not forget Ancient Greek), John! Laughing

Fluffy, take at look at the atrocious level of written English displayed by a disturbingly high proportion of posts on just this site, by 'teachers', lord help us, and you'll see that Johnslat's point is very much spot on.

True, the average illiterate English-speaking yob can get by with just mouthing a few monosyllables, and can be understood by all other yobos, but is this really what Johnslat and I are talking about? Learned discourse, man! For that one needs a proper vocabulary. So yes, Latin, and Greek, feature highly if one is to claim a high command of spoken and written English. No wonder there at all. Except perhaps in the beauty that is unlocked upon discovery...

I think such "atrocious" posters could simply do with learning some English before anything else! Anyway, time now methinks to start some discussion proclaiming the benefits of learning Chinese ROFL.
